Lincoln, Nebraska was founded on August 15, 1867 by Abraham Lincoln and his wife Mary Todd Lincoln. The city was named for the then-new nation’s first president, James K. Polk. It has since become one of America’s most important cities and is home to more than 700,000 residents. In 1865, when Lincoln was elected U.S. President, he traveled through Nebraska on his way to the California state line. After reaching that point and inspecting the area around Omaha, he ordered General John Pope to move settlers into the area in order to secure a route for Union forces moving up the Missouri River towards Springfield and eventually Baton Rouge in southern Louisiana. Lincoln also pushed for passage of the Vibration Act – which helped ensure that steamboats operating on Nebraska waters could not be used offensively by Confederate forces – during his time as President. The act passed both houses of Congress with little opposition but it died at the state level because of resistance from farmers who felt their rights were being violated by federal intervention in their affairs. In 1868, following Lincoln’s election as U.S. President and assuming office in Washington D.C., he issued an executive order creating what would become known as The Ford Administration – a time period during which many significant changes took place within American society including advancements in social welfare programs (eagerly pursued under Ulysses S Grant), women’s suffrage (discovered courtesy of Susan B Anthony) and race relations (including passage of THE Civil Rights Act). In addition, Union troops had just withdrawn from Missouri after successfully besieging Cairo while Commandant General Joseph Hooker conducted a series of successful marches across Iowa into Illinois territory leading up to Chicago; this event led to several incidents involving black citizens living near military encampments where they were strip searched or arrested without charge or trial before being marched back out into open country again without any judicial process whatsoever.). The years leading up to World War I saw great strides made within American society with Prohibition becoming fully implemented nationwide while new technologies like radioactively enriched uranium were developed; however, due largely to Germany’s aggression throughout much of Europe during that same decade plus natural disasters such as WWI-era tsarism devastating Russia proper (leading ultimately to Lenin taking control over Russian Revolution), war broke out shortly thereafter across Europe resulting in millions dead along with massive destruction across Allied nations including Austria-Hungary (whose Emperor Franz Josef abdicated amidst popular unrest resultant from economic woes caused by WWI). With so much happening outside America during those fateful years – specifically within European borders – it is difficult notto see Lincoln himself as a key player in all aspects of that conflict(as well as countless others subsequent thereto).
