In 1902, the first coast guard station in Lexington was established. The Coast Guard Station at Lexington played a vital role in the early days of the community. It was here that officers conducted patrols and responded to emergencies on the Nebraska-Kansas border. The first equipment used at the station was a small boat and some oars. The Station also operated an open air store which served as a place for residents to buy supplies during emergencies. In 1916, Coast Guard personnel were transferred from Omaha to Lexington when that city became part of Nebraska. In 1922, another small boat was purchased at the Station and this time it was used for patrol duties along both coasts of Nebraska and Kansas. In 1951, a new Coast Guard Station opened in Omaha and soon contributed to helping keep our communities safe during times of emergency such as floods or hurricanes. In 1995, the original property located next to downtown Lexington was donated by Mrs. Lula Noland to become the Northeast District Headquarters for the Coast Guard’s NE States Command Office Area

The idea for this gift came about because then-Captain Samuel Eliot Morison had published an article about Lindbergh’s crossing of the Atlantic in his book “The Great White Way.” 2. A submarine simulator In 1951, Captain James Eilers gifted a submarine simulator to the Coast Guard after purchasing it from General Electric Company. This was in memory of Eilers' service as Commandant (Chief) at Miami Naval Shipyard where he supervised construction of submarines during World War II and later led Operation Neptune's Spear (the sinking of three Japanese ships). With more than 2200 submariners who served under him during his career, it is clear that Captain Eilers care deeply about ensuring that submariners have access to any training they need to protect our coastlines! 3. A helicopter simulator In 1984, Captain John Fenton gifted a helicopter simulator to the Coast Guard after purchasing it from General Electric Company subsidiary Sikorsky Helicopter Corporation. This was in memory with Fenton's experience commanding helicopters while working at US Air Force Base Elmendorf AFB Alaska during Operation Desert Storm (1991). The helicopter simulator allows officers and enlisted members alike access to real-world controls so they can fly helicopters safelyprototype helicopters or advanced rotorcraft such as AH-64 Apache attack helicopters! 4. A lifeboat museum ship replica In 1997, Rear Admiral David Jantz gave a lifeboat museum ship replica ("ERIKA")to the Coast guard in recognitionof their role protecting maritime safety along U S coasts since 1851 when USCGC Constitution sailed into port at Newport News Va., becomingthe first vessel ever commissioned by United States coastguard . "Erika" is currently moored off Key West Fla., just southof Florida Keys National Monument/Island Museum which preserves her primary purpose -A recreated historical lifesaving boat USS Constitution Museum Ship
