Lexington is a city in and the county seat of Lincoln County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 52,569 at the 2010 census. It is the 7th most populous city in Nebraska and the 9th most populous city in Iowa. Lexington is also the second-largest city in Nebraska after Omaha. The area that would become Lexington was first settled by Native Americans in what is now Lincoln County on land that was part of the Sioux Nation before being acquired by white settlers. In 1852, David Sibley founded what would become Omaha and named it after his hometown of Lexington, Kentucky. The town quickly grew into a major metropolis with over 10,000 residents by 1860. By 1870, Lexington had reached its peak as a railroad center with lines running to Council Bluffs (Iowa), Des Moines (Iowa), and Chicago ( Illinois). In 1872, an act called the Kansas–Nebraska Act was passed which repealed slavery in all but three of Nebraska's 99 counties; including Lincoln County which remained slaves until 1907. As a result of this decree from Congress, much of central and eastern Nebraska became rural areas where farming still prevailed although some small towns started to emerge around larger ones such as Omaha and Lancaster (Pa.). However, downtown Louisville began to grow rapidly due to its location near main railway crossings making it one of the busiest cities for commerce in early 20th century America. As cotton became more important than other crops during World War I due to increased demand from Germany for raw materials needed for their war effort (), many farmers moved away from farming towards manufacturing jobs throughout northeastern America during peacetime while others returned to agriculture following World War II when resources were plentiful again. With no natural gas available until well drilling began late in the 20th century (), much eastern Nebraska reverted back to agricultural production through off-farm employment opportunities during those years even as urban areas continued growth (). In recent decades however (), downtown Louisville has seen an increasing amount of tourism becoming increasingly popular among locals as well as visitors who come looking for attractions like bourbon barrelmaking or live music performances at local bars/clubs (). Furthermore,, thanks largely to Interstate 35W which bisects both Lincoln County & Lyon County (& provides easy access into both) - fast transportation options have made Lexington one of fastest growing cities on Main Street across central Nebraska

In 1907, the town had a population of 992 people. By 1925, the population had grown to 1,411 people. The growth continued until 1959 when the population fell to 753 people.
