On July 10, 1892, La Vista, Nebraska's first police department was organized with the help of a group of businessmen. The men who pooled their money to create the department were inspired by an article in the Omaha World-Herald that described how American policing had changed since 1881. They wanted to provide a better service to the citizens of their town and make sure they could trust their police officers. The men who contributed to creating La Vista's first police department were: John W. Steuben, George D. Smith, Charles H. Pond and Atherton C. Butler. Each man donated $5 for equipment and uniforms and $10 for supplies such as revolvers and horses. This donation allowed La Vista's officers to begin work on September 1, 1892. The original detachment consisted of five policemen: two captains and three subcaptains who served under the command of one officer until 1898 when it was decided that a sergeant would be commanding all police forces in the community at large. In 1916, La Vista became part of territorial Oklahoma which united with Kansas in 1907; this madeLa Vista the last Nebraska town to join the United States after Lincoln ( Neb.) In 1920, La Vista became a city; this coincided with its annexation into neighboring El Dorado County which also included Fort Kearny (now Kearney) . Since 1923 when El Dorado County merged with Dodge City County containing La Vista/Fort Kearney into that county, there have been no changes in either law enforcement or population size within city limits - only annexation into other counties! However some aspects unique to city life have persisted such as having an elected Mayor (currently Donald Eads), special elections held for Councilmembers (currently four members), using Municipal Courtrooms located inside City Hall instead of County Courthouses (which are used by Dodge City), and allowing citizens voting privileges within CITY LIMITS while living outside those limits! To date it appears as though policeman gifts have not become popular among modern day residents inLaVista due largely to concerns about potential corruption or misuse - something which has never been verified however given that many current Police Officers reside withinCity Limits we cannot rule out this possibility!

In 1951 La Vista had another significant event when it lost its status as a farming community and became part of the newly formed city of Omaha metropolitan area which included all but five Douglas County towns within its boundaries including Newtonia (now North Newton), Fremont (now South Fremont), Bellevue (now east side of Bellevue Avenue near US 50), Hollandale (northwest side of US 50 near Ottawa Street) and Stonington (southwest corner of Ottawa Street). With this change La Vista experienced rapid growth becoming one of Omaha's most populous cities with more than 10 thousand residents by 1970. Today La Vita enjoys some much needed peace after years fullof noise pollution from local truck traffic plus air quality concerns brought about by nearby manufacturing plants closed or relocated over the past several decades; however many people here continue to lead busy normal lives without feeling any impact from outside forces - just like their ancestors did centuries ago!
