The first reference to coffee in La Vista was written by John Wesley Shriver in his 1892 book "A History of American Coffee". In this book, Shriver noted that the beans were brought over from Mexico and roasted at a monastery near Valladolid. He also mentioned that the beans were ground into powder and consumed as tea or espresso. In 1916, The Omaha World-Herald published an article entitled "Coffee Explored" which detailed how local farmers had started growing coffee plants in their backyards. The article also mentioned that local businessmen had bought land around the monastery where they used to roast coffee. After years of research, these businessmen hired two Italian brothers named Luigi Filippi and Giovanni Pesce to continue importing and roasting the beans. In 1925, The La Vista Chamber of Commerce got together with some other businesses near the old convent to start a cooperative called Nuova Rotonda Coffee Company Ltd.. This company produced quality coffee until it folded in 1984. It was during this time period that Jack Dempsey began using La Vista's Cafeteria for his fights outside Omaha Stadium (now University Field). This allowed him to purchase fresh roasted coffees from local farmers each day so he could enjoy his caffeine fix without having to leave his lair on Western Avenue downtown.
La Vista is located in the eastern Lincoln county of Nebraska. The town was founded on December 15, 1851, by Dr. Augustus Winchester and his wife Sarah. La Vista was named after Lieutenant Colonel Augustus P. La Vista (1822-1910), a Confederate general who fought in the American Civil War and became a national hero after leading an armored division into battle at Gettysburg. La Vista had a population of only eighty people when it was platted in 1851, but by 1865 it had grown to over 1,000 residents due to the influx of freed slaves from Missouri and Kentucky. By 1870, La Vista had become one of the largest towns in Nebraska with a population of 5,500 people. In 1876, La Vista began building its first schoolhouse which would serve as the town's primary school until 1906 when it replaced the wooden structure with a brick one. In 1886, La Vista became the first post office in Nebraska and still serves as that town's main mail center today. In 1907- 1908, La Vista built its first hospital which still stands today as one of the most important medical facilities in town. Between 1916 and 1918, La Vista constructed its second schoolhouse which served as both town hall and local high school for many years before being replaced by its current structure in 1984. In 1932, two members of Congress from Lincoln County – Harry S Truman and Floyd Lamberton – were born here: Anwar Sadat Hussein III (1905-1981) was president of Egypt from 1981-1985 and Jimmy Carter (1946-2008) was Ulysses S Grant’s Vice President during his last term as president before he succeeded to succeed him on November 4th 2008). On July 20th 2014 Representative Steve King announced that he will run for Iowa’s 3rd congressional district seat vacated by Tom Vilsack on January 3rd 2015; King has made previous statements about running for Congress in districts across Iowa including this announcement In 2016 there were protests against Trump's Executive Order 13747 blocking Muslims from entering America; these protests continued even after inauguration day
