La Vista is a small town in central Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Omaha-Council Bluffs metropolitan area. La Vista is located near the eastern edge of the Great Plains and on U.S. Route 6 and State Highway 283. The early history of La Vista can be traced back to 1853 when James Waddell founded a post office here with five other settlers. In 1877, La Vista was platted as a town by John Ayer and named after General James Kossuth's home state of Iowa, Illinois, and Missouri - also called "Vista." By 1888, Laughlin & Company had built a sawmill on the current site of Main Street; this mill continued operations until 1907 when it was sold to J C Hickey & Son. At that time, Main Street became known as "Hickey Avenue". In 1903, La Vista incorporated as a city under Nebraska law; this action made it one of only two cities in Nebraska to be granted city status (the other being Fremont). The first mayor was Harvey Knowles; later mayors were: Harry Laughlin (1910-15), Clarence defaulting Fenton Woodworth (1920-25), Averill Harbison (1927-30) and Franklin D'Amore (1933-35). During World War II residents raised money for military purposes by selling goods they produced such as flour or butter using postage stamps which they collected from their mail carriers. The post office closed in 1963 but remains open as an historical curiosity now used for storage purposes by the La Vista Historical Society Incorporated which operates it according to rules established in 1978 by then Mayor Don Banks who inherited it from his predecessor Harvey Knowles Jr.. The building has been restored including new roofing while stillserving its original purpose as a postal station between 1923 and 1963 before becoming an museum operated by society members during that period primarily focusing on local history with occasional displays about American Indian Wars fought nearby.. It lost its status as a major city after the Interstate 80 highway was built in the early 1990s, but has taken on a new identity as an arts and culture center. La Vista is also known for its annual livestock show and Parade of Roses.
La Vista was founded in 1871 by Captain John A. Fremont and his wife, Nellie. La Vista was named for theVIEW from which it took its name. The first post office at La Vista was established in 1872. In 1879, La Vista became a town and the first mayor of La Vista was J.L. Dickinson. In 1907, the Nebraska State Legislature passed a bill that designated La Vista as a city within the state of Nebraska. On November 3, 1907, the City of La Vista was incorporated with a population of 1,500 residents and it became one of the most populous cities in Nebraska. On October 15th, 1951, an earthquake struck central Nebraska killing over 200 people and injuring thousands more including many who were living in downtown La Vista when it happened.
