In La Vista, Nebraska, the United States Air Force has been deploying gift History for many years. The history of the air force in La Vista began on December 16, 1941 when President Franklin D. Roosevelt placed a call to activated the American Forces in Europe (AFCE) and ordered Operation Neptune's Spear which was the first major overseas operation by Americans since World War I. This order called for 1 million men and women to be mobilized and deployed to England in support of the British war effort. The air force initially consisted of only 45 planes which were used for aerial reconnaissance and bombing missions against German targets. By 1945, however, the USAF had grown to more than 6,000 aircraft and personnel stationed throughout Europe including over 100 squadrons stationed at RAF Lakenheath in Hampshire England. The air force played a significant role during World War II both offensively with its bombers and defensively with its fighter jets providing protection for Allied forces as they bombed Nazi targets night after night. After World War II ended, the USAF reverted back to barracks-based operations as part of an overall military restructuration that eliminated most operational units within NATO countries. Inactivated squadrons such as The 49th Fighter Squadron located at RAF Fairford in Wiltshire England were reactivated under this new structure but never again flew combat missions; their last mission being flown on October 9, 1949 while based at Sheppard AFB near Wichita KS). On November 15th 1948 Congress passed Senate Bill 893 (SBN 893) which established Air Defense Command (ADC) with responsibility for all U.S strategic air forces west of Russia including bombers and fighters operating from United States European Air Forces bases outside Continental US airspace acting jointly with Army Tactical Air Command (ATAC). When the United States Air Force deployed its F-15E Strike Eagle aircraft to provide air support for NATO’s Operation Noble Eagle, many people were surprised. This was not the first time the USAF had sent an F-15E into action; in fact, it was only the second time a fighter jet had been used in this capacity. The first instance occurred during Desert Storm, when two F-15Es from Fighter Wing Fifteenth at Al Udeid airbase supported ground forces as they attacked Iraqi tanks and artillery positions. The deployment of these jets is significant because they are very capable fighters that can fly long distances with great accuracy and efficiency. They are also greatly coveted by both pilots and commanders because of their speed, firepower, and range. In addition to their capabilities as fighters, the F-15E is also able to serve as a bomber or ground attack aircraft. This makes it an ideal plane for operations in different environments such as Afghanistan or Iraq where airfields are scarce or nonexistent.
