Kearney, Nebraska is a town located in Kearney County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 5,888 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Omaha-Council Bluffs, NE Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to inhabit what is now Kearney County were the Comanche and Kiowa nations. In 1851, George Armstrong Custer encountered them while attacking the Sioux Nation's capital of Fort Laramie. After his victory over the Sioux in that battle, General Custer offered a land grant to any Indian who would move into Dakota Territory west of the Missouri River. The first group to take up this offer was James Fenton Kearney and his party from Ohio. They arrived in 1854 and founded what would become Kearney. In 1861, when Abraham Lincoln was elected president of the United States, he recommended that Nebraska be admitted as a state within the Union on condition that it provide for “a system of education which will entitle our sons to an equal opportunity with those of other states” On February 12th 1862, Nebraska became official when it was ratified by Congress and added to the Union as a state without taking affect from within its borders; however it did not become fully functioning until 1865 when all government functions were transferred from Iowa City (the original seat) eastward to Omaha proper due to overcrowding in Council Bluffs (the original seat). Kearney had been living on their current site since they moved here in 1854; they had first used Adobe Walls as their primary trading post along Raccoon Creek which later became known as "Kearny Corners."
