Kearney, Nebraska is home to the first coffee beans roasted in a small pot on a farmstead basis. The beans were roasted by James Fenton and his family in 1892. It was not until 1906 that the first commercial roasting of coffee took place in Kearney. At this time, the town had just over 100 residents and only two businesses- a grocery store and an apothecary. The local roaster, John A. Roemer, began selling ground coffee at the grocery store and also created a café to serve as a retail outlet for his products. The early years of commercial coffee production in Kearney were filled with innovation and progress. In 1911, Roemer opened the first modernized espresso machine in America which he designed himself. This machine quickly became popular among commercial shooters throughout Omaha and Northern Iowa due to its simplicity and performance. Additionally, Roemer spearheaded the development of paper cups for espresso consumption which allowed him to increase sales at his establishment exponentially. In 1916, James Fenton died unexpectedly leaving behind an estate consisting of more than 20 acres of farmland including 3 breweries- one of which was located in Kearney- along with 1 hectare (2 acres) of trees suitable for growing Coffee beans! With this large acreage available, it was only natural that Fenton would begin developing a newcoffee plantation within it; however, it wasn't until 1921 when he succeeded in obtaining government assistance throughpassing legislation granting exclusive rights to establish such plantations statewide! This important victory marked an important milestone for both Fenton's plantation business as well as Coffee production overall; It helped support economic stability during tough times whilesupporting growth across rural America!
