Kearney, Nebraska is a small town located in Kearney County, Nebraska. The population was 568 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Omaha-Council Bluffs, NE Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by Mormon pioneers in 1847. Kearney became a post office in 1851 and prospered as a cotton-growing community until the Great Depression hit in 1929. After World War II, Kearney regained its prosperity as an agricultural center with a large livestock operation and modest manufacturing facilities. However, today's Kearney is largely composed of single-family homes and businesses clustered around its main shopping district. The town has one high school - Kearney High School - which serves grades 9 through 12. There are also two elementary schools - Hiawatha Elementary School and Midwest Elementary School - within walking distance of each other. Kearney is located about halfway between Omaha and Council Bluffs on State Highway 7A (US 71). This highway forms the eastern border of the town while US 71 borders it to the south and west; both highways run concurrently for most of their length. The nearest airport is at Omaha International Airport, about 20 miles east of Kearney on I-80/I-29W; Amtrak provides passenger service to Chicago Union Station, Illinois, which lies about 25 miles north of Kearney on I-80/I-29W; and ferries cross Lake Nebo from Iowa to Council Bluffs across the Missouri River near Kearney every day during summer months (see "Get around" below).
