Kearney was founded on November 26, 1881 by John Kearney and his wife Mary Fenton. The town was named for General George A. Smith (1806-1882), who served as president of the United States from 1881 to 1889 and as governor of Nebraska from 1886 to 1890. The first post office in Kearney was established in 1883. The current post office building was built in 1911 and renovated in 2006/2007. In 1916 Kearney began issuing driver's licenses with a photograph instead of an engraved name. Kearney is a small town in Kearney County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 592 at the 2010 census. The community was founded in 1868 by George Kearney and his brother-in-law, John Davenport. It became a city in 1907. Kearney is located on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. The first settler in Kearney was George Kearney who arrived there in 1868 from Illinois. He built a log cabin and named it "Kearney." His brother-in-law, John Davenport, also came to Kearney and soon started an agricultural business with his son Jacob Davenport. In 1870, they erected a new log house which still stands today. They also began to cultivate some of the land around their cabin for crops and raised chickens, pigs, horses and cows until 1886 when they decided to move away from their rural lifestyle and establish themselves as citizens of what would later become Kearney City. In 1907, Mayor Harry Schieffer of Omaha recommended that the city be established within the limits of what are now Douglas County and Kearny Accordingly became one of its earliest residents. The city's growth continued as other farmers moved into the area such as Wm Hite who settled down near present day Sheridan Avenue and Harry Crouch who bought land on South Third Street east of town where he built a large farmstead known as "Hitchcock's Prairie" which still stands today (Crouch House/Heineman House). By 1912 there were over 100 people living in this nascent city with many businesses including grain elevators (owned by J A Hitchcock), meatpacking plants (owned by P G Ellis & Sons), bakery (owned by B C Bigelow) and more than 20 residences including several highly respected churches such as First Baptist Church (founded 1865), Methodist Episcopal Church (1893) and Reformed Presbyterian Church (1901). During World War I the local military hospital served soldiers from both sides on Long Island Sound but closed after hostilities ceased; however due to increased demand for services during World War II helicopters landed here providing essential medical assistance during wartime shortages elsewhere across America In 1951 Stonington Oil Refinery opened making it possible for locals to purchase oil directly from drillers rather than through tankers Today much like then many aspects of life here remain unchanged despite advances made elsewhere; example: high school graduation ceremonies are still held at First Baptist Church followed by dinner at Mesquite steakhouse before festivities lead back home
