The Kearney, Nebraska Army Garrison was established in 1881. The first post was at the current location of the Civic Center on State Street. At that time, it was a small garrison with only five officers and fifty privates. The present-day army garrison has over 5,000 soldiers and civilians employed throughout its many functions. Army gift history can be traced back to 1861 when the Nebraska Territorial Militia was organized into an infantry regiment under the command of General John C. Fremont. That same year, Major General Zachary Taylor ordered out a detachment of troops to survey and take possession of what is now Kearney County in central Nebraska. By 1865, Colonel James Buell had organized the 1st Regiment Iowa Volunteer Infantry here in Kearney County as part of his volunteer brigade under command of General Ulysses S. Grant. In 1868, Captain George Armstrong Custer assigned his 2nd Cavalry Regiment here from Minnesota to help suppress Indian uprisings in South Dakota and Wyoming Territory during the Dakota War (1862-1865). The Kearney, Nebraska Army National Guard's history goes back to 1881. The men and women of the Kearney Army National Guard fought in various wars over the years, but it was World War I that truly defined their unit's identity. They served in France and Belgium as part of the America First Expeditionary Force, and then returned home to support the war effort. The unit was eventually disbanded in 1919, but its legacy lives on today as one of Nebraska's most honored military organizations.
Kearney is a small town located in Kearney County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 592 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Omaha–Council Bluffs, NE-IA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1881 by J. W. Kearney and his family. Kearney is named after General George Armstrong Custer, who was killed in action during the American Civil War. In 1927, Kearney became an incorporated village under the name of North Omaha. The village charter expired in 1971 and it reverted to its original name of Kearney until it converted to a city on November 3, 2002 with a population of 8,362 according to the 2010 census. On December 26th of that year it adopted its current name as Kearney City (officially becoming an official city for all purposes including incorporation). The population has since grown significantly reaching 912 on July 1st, 2018 which makes it the third largest city in Nebraska after Lincoln and Omaha Kearney is located at (41.*10**), altitude 6562 feet (1929 m). Kearney is a town in Kearney County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Omaha–Council Bluffs Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Kearney was Jonas Sibley in 1857. He and his family built a log cabin on the site of what is now Kearney Elementary School. Other early settlers included George Neely, who arrived in 1859; Wm. Hodge, who came in 1861; John Tiltemaker, who arrived in 1865; Samuel Goodspeed, who arrived in 1868; and Otho Ladd, who arrived in 1870. In 1875, Kearney had a post office which served until 1907. The town was named for General James Buren (1792-1865) and his wife Mary Baker Buren (1796-1864). General Buren served as superintendent of Indian Affairs for Nebraska from 1862 to 1865 and later became governor of that state from 1865 to 1871. In 1898, Kearney had its own school system which lasted until 1915 when it merged with the Omaha school district. In 1915 also(), Kearny had its own theater company which staged plays until 1922 when it merged with the Omaha Playhouse Company In 1922 also(), Kearney lost its post office status but continued to operate as an incorporated village under the name "Kearney." The community experienced heavy growth during World War II due to the need for military housing near Omaha Naval Station Pier No. 3 (later Omaha Air Force Base). The population increased by more than 100 percent between 1940 and 1945 because of this demand alone! After the war ended however, economic development slowed down as many people returned home to their old homes or returned to their maiden names after having married someone else while living away from home during wartime service or because they had children out of wedlock at that time: such practices were not uncommon then! In 1970s%, there were numerous protests against proposed plans by local businessmen to demolish several businesses within the small town center by force if necessary due to low real estate values resulting from high inventory levels caused by overpopulation following World War II! Most notably these protests took place around 1975 when plans called for building an enlarged Midway Airport next door instead of using available land adjacent to downtown where most residents lived! These protests eventually led to changes within local government making it more difficult for developers unilaterally decide what type of development would be allowed within a specific area without prior consent from all interested parties including those living adjacent thereto!)
