Hastings, Nebraska is a small town in the US state of Nebraska. The population was 1,031 at the 2010 census. Hastings is located in the northeast corner of the state and straddles the border of Dodge County and Rush County. It is bordered by the towns of Seward on its east side, Ironton on its north side, and Anaconda on its west side. The community began as a wagon train stop called "New Hastings" on the Sanitary and Ship Canal near present-day Hastings. The first post office was established in 1867, but no town was named after it until 1879 when Nathan Hanks donated land to form Hastings Township. In 1899, General George Armstrong Custer's funeral took place in Hastings and large crowds attended due to its proximity to Chicago. Hastings' economy has been based mostly on agriculture since it was founded. Russel Sage Manufacturing Company produced hay and feed for livestock, brewing beer for local residents, making textiles including clothing for local stores such as Sears & Roebuck and other businesses, and hand-building items such as clocks from lumber scraps found around town during construction projects or when wood became too scarce nearby quarries. The last major manufacturing operation closed down in 2006 although there are still remnants of some operations left today including a few textile mills that produce fabric made from recycled materials such as cotton twill or linen. As one of only four towns in Dodge County without an airport(the others being Seward, Anaconda/Rushville/Goodyear Heights), Hastings did not experience significant growth until recent decades when Interstate 81 arrived within five miles (8 km) of town providing access to larger markets outside of Omaha Airport while also supporting transportation infrastructure development within town limits which have included two expressways(I-81W & I-80E) served by three stations each with full service airports available within 10 minutes walk or less: major retailers like Walmart Supercenter (opened 2009), Meijer with over 150 stores statewide (2009 opening), Target (leased 2003) - one now operated by JCPenney - myMothersRetirement home located directly across from I-81WExit #3 serving both retail parking & restaurant functions (& adjacent hotel; see photo below)), several restaurants & bars (~10; all open late night or early morning past 9pm), plus several mini grocery stores (~5) dotting downtown area throughout most days outside Indian summer hours; 4 'parking garages' off main street surrounded by lawn with individual spaces for 2 cars each ($50 per month); 1 large lot along busy edge of main street offers 6 spaces +1 handicapped accessible spot $100 per year maximum + tax; 3 churches serve primarily transient populations; 1 health club serves primarily active adult populations who use it mainly for weightlifting purposes only

In the 1930s, restrictions placed on farming led to a decline in Hastings's overall economic activity; however, it has since become an important cultural community thanks to its strong local music scene and art galleries.
