From there until 1992 when it closed due to lack of interest from investors, Hastings had only one movie theater-the Barton Playhouse which seats about 50 people inside ]. Hastings, Nebraska is a small town located in the eastern Nebraska county of Douglas. The population was 2,828 at the 2010 census. Hastings is part of the Omaha–Council Bluffs metropolitan area. The first European to settle in what is now Hastings was Jesse James in 1847. The town was platted in 1872 by ranchers and farmers who were looking for a location that would be able to support their livestock and crops. The name Hastings honor General William H. Hastings, who fought during the American Civil War as a general with the Union army. After his death in 1865, General Hastings' daughter donated land to build a school and cemetery there. Hastings has been home to many businesses over the years including Wacoal, which manufactured radios and televisions until it closed its doors in 1990; Meadowlark Bank which operated from 1936-2002; and US Bancorp which opened its doors on September 15, 1907 as one of only two banks west of Chicago open to citizens without being subordinated to any other institution like Sears or JCPenney. In addition, four churches have been built within walking distance of each other: First Baptist Church (founded 1895), United Methodist Church (founded 1902), Catholic Parish of Christ (founded 1904), and Evangelical LutheranChurch (established 1911). Hastings, the first major general of United States Army during the American Civil War. The town had a population of only 100 people when it was founded and today it has a population of over 10,000 residents. The first school in Hastings was built on land donated by John C. Frick and built in 1869-70. In 1889, the town became part of the Omaha (Nebraska) County seat and an election to determine who would be its mayor took place on November 3 that year. Charles Wigglesworth won with over seventy percent of the vote. In 1896, Hastings became part of the newly created Lincoln (Nebraska) County and an election to determine who would be its county judge took place on November 3 that year with Samuel Prentice winning with over eighty percent of the vote. In 1907, Hastings voted to become a city and became one of America's largest cities with a population over 25,000 people at its peak. It is now estimated that around 10% or less of its residents live within city limits while most residents live outside either downtown or Mundelein Avenue east of I-80/I-294 northbound exit 14A which serves as their main commercial center for their community
