Grand Island is a small town in Nebraska, located on the Omaha River. The population was 5,616 at the 2010 census. Grand Island is part of the Omaha-Council Bluffs Micropolitan Statistical Area. The village of Grand Island was founded in 1854 by James Gillett and his family as a trading post on the edge of present-day Omaha City. Gillett named his settlement after his father, General John C. Grant, who had led American forces during the Mexican–American War and later became president of Mexico. In 1871, the Village of Grand Island merged with neighboring Council Bluffs to form the current community of Grand Island. According to local legend, when a group of Native Americans attacked settlers in 1868, fourteen men were killed and many others captured before they could escape into the night (the story is told that two men managed to make it back home). Afterwards, all residents were required to carry an annual firewood load from their homes across the river to Fort Kearney for supply trains arriving from Missouri; this tradition continued until 1984. In 1905, however, Congress passed legislation authorizing Sioux Nation members living in Nebraska's Great Lakes region (in Iowa and Minnesota) to purchase land within one hundred miles of Omaha for agricultural purposes only without giving consideration to religious or charitable uses; as a result, much of what is now central Nebraska was transferred from Sioux Territory into Dakota Territory by 1907.
