The Nebraska navy gift history can trace its beginnings back to 1872 when the first steamboat, the "Nebraska", was built in Fremont, Nebraska. The ship transported goods between Omaha and Grand Island. Over time, other steamboats were added to the fleet and cargo shipments increased. In 1912, the state legislature appropriated $10,000 for a new navy building on the grounds of what is now Omaha Community College. The cornerstone was laid on October 1st of that year by Rear Admiral John J. Schofield. The new naval base opened in 1914 and it served as homeport for the USS Nebraska (BB-48) until she was decommissioned in 1979. During World War II, Omaha Naval Station played an important role in providing military supplies to ships afloat and ashore throughout Japan and Europe. After hostilities ended, the station closed down but not before leaving behind a legacy of maritime culture which continues to this day in Omaha Naval Station's Sailors' Museum. Today, visitors can explore exhibits about local waterways including the Nebo River and Lake Wakarusa through interactive exhibits with displays from both submerged objects discovered during archaeological excavation projects as well as reconstructed artifacts from known Navy vessels dating back to 1872!

The name "Grand Island" is derived from an early settler's claim that it was part of what he called "The Girdle of Grand." The first white man to visit and map Grand Island appears to have been Nicholas-Jacques Cartier in 1799. In 1854, a group of Mormon pioneers built Fort Laramie on the northeast side of the island as part of their efforts to settle across Iowa and Nebraska Territory. When Omaha became a city in 1868, Fort Laramie served as its military post until 1898 when it was surrendered to Union forces during the American Civil War. Grand Island, Nebraska is a town in Kearney County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. The name comes from the word "grand" meaning "greater" and "island" because of its location on an islet in the Omaha River. Grand Island was first settled by people from Illinois as early as 1854. In 1868, the government of Nebraska ceded land to Dakota Territory east of Omaha for a railroad connecting Minneapolis with Sioux Falls, South Dakota. In 1870, the Omaha Railroad built a line through Grand Island and connected it with Omaha. In 1902, the Great Western Railway extended its line to Grand Island and connected it with Interstate 80. Today, there is no active railway connection between Omaha and Grand Island; however, Amtrak service provides passenger rail service between Chicago and Minneapolis-St Paul via Iowa City (Iowa) Station. The history of Grand Island can be traced back to 1854 when pioneer settlers arrived in what is now Kearney County. They named their new settlement after George Washington's island in the river where they foundered while sailing downriver on their journey westward: Island Park or Gwarton Isle ( afterward renamed Grant Park ).
