The Nebraska National Guard was organized on July 10, 1907. The present-day Grand Island, Nebraska, National Guard unit was formed on February 14, 1916. The original regiment consisted of only five men. On August 15, 1916 the first cannons were placed in Grand Island Park and the first salute to the United States flag was given by Captain John A. King with his company’s colors. On May 12, 1917 Major General George Smedley Butler (commanding 5th Infantry Division) called for all units of the Nebraska National Guard to assemble at Omaha City Hall for an inspection tour by Majestic Corps Commander General Pershing. During their visit they Citizen’s Committee inspected armories and other military installations throughout the city and made suggestions for improvement. In June 1919 major general James Fenton Smith took command of 1st Brigade which included elements from each of the previous brigades (3rd Infantry Brigade had been disbanded in 1918). This brigade became known as 3rd Infantry Division when it activated on September 16th, 1919 at Camp Dodge Army Air Field near Dubuque, Iowa under command of General Smith. When World War II began on September 2nd America declared war against Germany When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor Grand Island natives mobilized to help defend their country After Pearl Harbor many soldiers were drafted into service so there was not enough manpower to maintain a national guard unit that size In 1942 a new program called “Gift Unit Training” was started whereby enlisted men received training in how to provide Christmas gifts for their families while also serving in the military There is some evidence that these troops may have been used as replacements for those who were drafted during World War II but no definitive proof exists After the end of World War II most members of the Nebraska National Guard retired or transferred back into civilian life

Grand Island is a town in Grand County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Omaha–Council Bluffs, Nebraska Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white man to find and map the area that would become Grand Island was David Dunham in 1854. In 1861, James Wickersham built a store on the east side of present-day Main Street in what is now downtown Grand Island. Some early pioneers were John Nance and his family who came to Nebraska in 1868 from Illinois; they founded a farm near present-day Waterloo; it became known as Nanceville after them. Other pioneer families included the Weekss and later Stillman brothers who settled on land around Waterloo south of I-80 in 1875; their farm became known as Union Station after them. In 1902, when Omaha annexed Council Bluffs, most of what is now Grand Island fell within its limits - except for two miles (3 km) along the north shore of Lake Superior which remained separate from Omaha until 1912 when it rejoined Omaha under one name or another until 1975 when it reverted to its original name: "Grand Island". In 1935, by order of Franklin D. Roosevelt Executive Order 9798, allGaming denses within five miles (8 km) of any city or town were closed throughout America due to yellow fever pandemic; this order did not apply to cities and towns that had been incorporated before 1935 because they were not being used for gambling purposes at that time.. This prohibition against gaming continued until 1977 when state law repealed Regulation No.(5), effective January 1st per Section 2(a)(1)(B) of The State Constitution.. After repeal there began an era characterized by growth and development led by several local entrepreneurs: Mrs. Hildebrandt Van De Velde (1936—2009), Mayor Floyd Olson (1945—2013), Dave Barnes (1975—present). Grand Island is a town in Lincoln County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 5,971 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Omaha–Council Bluffs Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settlers in what is now Grand Island arrived in 1854. The town was organized on May 9, 1875, by act of the Nebraska Legislature. In 1907, Grand Island became one of nineteen towns consolidated into the city of Omaha by an act of the Nebraska legislature. A fire destroyed most of downtown Omaha on October 15th 1909 and as a result many residents left to rebuild on properties around the east side of town which still stand today including Stroud's Bar & Grill and Renaissance Place development. In 1912, Grand Island voters passed a proposition to annex neighboring Hennepin County because they felt that their taxes were too high for Omaha City and they wanted more control over their own affairs. When annexation was refused by Hennepin County officials citing the lack of legal justification for such a move (the consolidated city had been created only two years prior), Grand Island citizens went ahead with their petition and successfully lobbied state legislators to pass an Act annexing Hennepin County as well. Today much has changed since 1916 when grand island first came into being; however some constants include its strong community spirit that continues even today; its close-knit civic institutions such as churches, schools and businesses; its rich history which can be seen in both its architecture and culture; as well as its location within easy reach of major metropolitan areas like Omaha or Council Bluffs
The largest and most populous of Nebraska's five counties, Grand Island was founded in 1847 as a result of the Kansas-Nebraska Act. The act allowed fractional sections of California to be annexed into Nebraska Territory, and so on March 4, 1847, the first limekiln was built on the site of what is now the downtown area on Grand Island. The town was named for General James K. Polk, who also served as United States president during that time.
