In 1885, Grand Island was the site of the first organized military drill in Nebraska. The purpose of this drill was to provide a warning to the surrounding communities about possible Indian incursions. From that date until 1945, the Grand Island Regiment served as an arm of the Nebraska National Guard. During World War II, when local militias were created to help protect Omaha and other cities in Nebraska, the regiment played a significant role in those efforts. For a time it also served as a training ground for members of the Lincoln Police Department. The regiment's history can be traced back to 1886 when three companies of soldiers from Fletcher County assembled at Grand Island for instruction on how to march and fight. At that time, there were no schools or hospitals on land that now makes up Grand Island. The drill instructors taught these men how to use rifles and shotguns, how to sign orders and march under arms, and how to recognize different types of uniforms. Afterward, these troops participated in various maneuvers throughout western Nebraska before being sent east for duty in World War I. When World War II began, all Nebraskans who could lay their hands on an rifle or shotgun volunteered for military service; however, there was no such thing as a draftable population due toincoln's prohibition against slavery (1861). To make up for the lack of draftees, many Nebraskans enlisted in hometown regiments known as "Creek Legion" units composed mostly of white farmers from central Kansas who had volunteered intothe militia because they felt they had little choice given Lincoln's position at war with Germany (Wright 1987). In addition to its participation in combat operations along with other American forces during World War II (e.g., Operation Overlord), Grand Island Regiment also received numerous awards including two Distinguished Unit Citations (DUC) which honored its performance during campaigns against Japanese forces at Bataan Peninsula and Lingayen Gulf respectively (Ellerbe 1984). AfterWorld War II endedand Granada re-established itself as an agricultural community isolated by prairies stretching northwardto present day Dodge Cityvia Interstate 80Grand Island Regimentwas again called into servicefora shortterm deploymentin 1961duringthe Cuban Missile Crisiswhen America faced international conflict over Cuba’s nuclear weapons program(Fletcher 1978). The town was founded in 1868 by Horace Greeley and his father, Josiah Greeley. The community sprang up around the railroad depot, which served as the town's first post office and store. The original name for Grand Island was "Hillsborough." A later name change to "Greeley" came about because of concerns that a new post office would be named after one of only two living family members—Horace Greeley's father Josiah Greeley—notorious for vigorously expanding education opportunities throughout eastern Nebraska. When it became apparent that no other member of the Greeleys' extended family wanted their share in the honorific, they changed their minds and adopted the more current nameplate on November 17, 1913. In 1916, when Highway 40 (now Interstate 80) was built through central Nebraska and truncated what had been Grand Island's eastern border to just east of its current line between Hastings County and Laramie County, residents banded together to form a city government with grandiose plans for grandeur: an impressive library/museum complex (designed by architect Edward Larrabee), a theater/entertainment center (planned by movie producer Harry Houdini), shopping malls (planned by department store magnate Jiggs Macy), and even a train station serving as both transportation hub for all of central Nebraska and access point to neighboring Wyoming Territory! Alas these ambitious dreams were never realized; highway construction instead routed traffic away from what had once been one of America's most vibrant small towns while also erasing any evidence of grandeur that may have surrounded it. Today much has changed since then: Grand Island now rests within boundaries set by state law rather than those prescribed by either developer planners or local citizens; its largest industry remains agriculture; its ZIP code includes many rural areas where commercial activity still predominate; but there are some reminders still visible today--such as a stoplight near State Street--that once constituted something quite special in this corner of America... including an adjacent cemetery that continues to serve as home to numerous flower recipients during local vignettes held annually during Memorial Day weekend

Grand Island is a small town in northeastern Nebraska, United States. The population was 5,670 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Omaha-Council Bluffs-Bellevue metropolitan area. The name "Grand Island" comes from two French words: Grand and Island. When the first Europeans arrived in what is now Nebraska, they named this place after the two islands in lakes Sammamish and Wabash. The first settler on Grand Island was Nicholas Hawksworth, who came to the area in 1851. He built a log cabin on an island in the river that flows through town today. In 1868, Jno. Hennepin returned from his survey of Canada and reported that he had found a rich ranch land near present day Grand Island containing over 600 acres (240 hectares). A group of men led by George Armstrong Custer landed on Grand Island on July 24, 1868 and founded what would become Custer County feeling confident that they had discovered an undiscovered gold field. However, shortly thereafter news reached them that General Ulysses S Grant had been killed at Gettysburg and there was no chance for any return trip to America; instead they decided to head east across country. The gold seekers abandoned their grandiose plans when they learned of General Grant's death and found only meager discoveries along their route northeastward into Kansas Territory which still contains most of Nebraska today: There were no mines or other large settlements west of Omaha until after World War II when industry began changing hands with development following democratization in those countries. In 1854, the United States Mint on Grand Island created the first U.S. coins and also produced the first banknotes in America. The mint was located on a small island about two miles (3 km) east of downtown Omaha. In 1912, the city of Omaha won control of the island when it was annexed by its neighbor, Nebraska City. Today, most of what is left of the old mint is buried under Downtown Omaha’s building complex.
