The town was then known as Fort Kearny and was a military post from 1868-1875. It was during this time that General James H. Harlan founded the Omaha National Guard and organized what is now called The Nebraska Army National Guard. The first military gift to be given to Grand Island residents came on December 1, 1865 when Major General Nathaniel Cummings donated an American cannon to the city in memory of his fallen brother Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Cummings. The cannon stayed in use until 1906 when it was placed into storage at Fort Riley and eventually sold for scrap metal. A few years later, another donation arrived in the form of an artillery piece known as “The Legion” which had been salvaged from a French army fort at Poseyville, Iowa. Later still, another donation arrived in the form of an old Ulysses S Grant revolver which had been salvaged from a firing range near Fayetteville, Arkansas during World War I. This gun ended up being given to Mayor George Wetherbee along with $500 cash for purchase of new guns for municipal guard duty effective January 1st 1906. In 1918 while serving as Commandant of Camp Dodge rifle range located adjacent to town limits, Majestic Gun Sales Manager Harry Ahern purchased two Remington 870 rifles (known today as Type 38 shotguns) and donated them back onto base without any compensation or guaranteries whatsoever (Lench). These rifles would remain active with Camp Dodge through World War II before being transferred out and ultimately scrapped in 1949 (Griffin). Finally, thanks to donations made by both Lt.-Colonels Lawrence Easley and Virgil Olson during World War II many antique firearms have come into circulation including some unique pieces such as an entire 12-gauge shotgun belonging to Rear Admiral Chester Nimitz himself!(Harding).
