Fremont is a city in Nebraska, located on the western bank of the Missouri River. The population was 43,083 at the 2010 census. Fremont was founded in 1854 by Mormon pioneers who journeyed westward from Nauvoo, Illinois. Fremont became a town in 1868 and then a city in 1907. The first permanent settler in Fremont was George W. Folsom, who arrived in 1850 and built a cabin near what is now Main Street. Folsom's son-in-law, John Nance Keyes, also settled here about this time and built an adobe house on what is now Park Avenue. The keyes family descendants still live here today. In 1853, Brigham Young assigned James Caldwell to build the first schoolhouse at what is now Elm Street and Fourth Avenue for students attending schools operated by the Mormon mission system under his direction. That year also saw the arrival of Isaac Hazard Wright and his brother Henry as traders from Council Bluffs, Iowa; they soon began trading goods with settlers in Fremont and nearby Rock Springs (now West Side). In 1855–56 President Eisenhower traveled through Nebraska on his way to California during his initial trip across America. He stopped at Rock Springs while en route to Fort Kearny where he visited members of the Latter Day Saints (Mormons) living there under management of John Taylor Buckinghams and other Mormons known as "The Elders." The president enjoyed so much of his visit that he decided to stay another night before continuing on his journey eastward that day. When he next heard about Fremont from one of those same Mormons living thereabouts, he ordered hazard lights put up along Main Street to show travelers passing through that vicinity how advanced civilization had become since he had last seen it just over two years earlier! Roughly two miles east of downtown Fremont stands Pioneer Cemetery which contains tombstones dating back to 1854 including that of George W Folsom himself! Many people believethat this cemetery may be home to one or more extraterrestrial beings due to its unique design including an archway leading into it which seems too large for human burial standards!
