Fremont is a town in Kearney County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Omaha-Council Bluffs, NE Metropolitan Statistical Area. Fremont has been served by the Fremont City School District since 1872. The first permanent settler in what is now Fremont was James Armstrong who built a cabin on the banks of the Missouri River in 1836. The town was founded by Colonel John Sibley and named for him after his home state of Virginia. In 1868, General Ulysses S. Grant became President of the United States and ordered all military posts be renamed cities or townships with a new name beginning with "Fremont". The original post office was established in 1870 and changed its name to Fremont in 1893 after it became a city under Nebraska law. The flour milling industry played an important role in early Fremont; several mills were built along what would later become State Street between 1865 and 1895. A steamboat landing on Buffalo Bayou made shipping easier to bring goods to Fremont from eastern Nebraska than had been possible before during this time period; this led to increased business for some businesses, such as Jardine & Mathews Paper Company which began production there in 1894 (and continued until 1951). One early resident of Fremont was Methodist Reverend George Wickersham whose house still stands today on East Main Street near I-80 Exit 132A (Fremon Avenue) just south of downtown.. In 1916, when Omaha World-Telegram reporter Harry Heald came to live in Fremont for two years he documented aspects of local life that would help make Omaha's Torchlight Parade more appealing: "It will not surprise you if you find men hereabouts who are not contented with their lot...Most people do very well without government assistance." After leaving Omaha he wrote: "There can be no question that our people are materially better off than they were five years ago - our schools have improved greatly while public spending has declined - but they must demand more from their government than simply getting good schools without any extras." On July 5th 1920 one year after Heald's departure from Omaha landmarks like the Masonic Temple across Elmira Road east of downtown Oakland say goodbye as well as hello to new citizens when those same streets were renamed Main Street east of downtown Fargo north Dakota Street following incorporation into Fargo County by then Governor Floyd Hays Sr.; these changes helped give rise to what is considered Fargo’s most famous street name – “MainStreet”
