The Coast Guard has been providing law and security services to the community in Fremont, Nebraska since 1915. The Coast Guard Station in Fremont is one of the oldest on the Omaha Peninsula. During World War II, the Coast Guard played a critical role in helping protect American citizens from Nazi Germany and its allies. In 1951, Congress passed the National Defense Authorization Act which established the Coast Guard as a permanently organized military service with headquarters at Fort Worth, Texas. In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson signed into law Publius XIII – also known as The Law of the Sea Treaty – which gave rise to America’s coastal defense program. The goal of this program was to provide for secure maritime transportation and commerce within our Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), including Guam, Puerto Rico, and all US Virgin Islands. Since then, many events have shaped our coast guard gift history: In 1969-1970, when Commodore George Dewey became Commandant of the Coast Guardsmen stationed at Guantanamo Bay Cuba after becoming Commander United States Naval Forces Central Command; Commodore Dewey ordered that all gifts received by station personnel be forwarded directly to him so that he could inspect them and determine whether they were appropriate for consumption or donation to local charities or schools; during his tenure at Guantanamo Bay there were numerous floods which destroyed many items stored inside barracks; Commodore Dewey also authorized funds be set aside for use in repairs to facility following various hurricanes over Memorial Day Weekend 1970-71; during his tenure as Commodore more than $2 million was spent on improvements at Guantanamo Bay Beach House where members resided ashore while awaiting assignment overseas; during his term as Commandant San Francisco’s first municipal marine officer (Marine Barracks)opened its doors with special ceremonies attended byLieutenant Governor Brown who visited on May 14th 1971]; During Commander Edward Pogue’s 3½ years as Commandant Headquarters Atlantic Fleet post Watergate Ulysses S Grant Boulevard opened its doors on Jan 10th 1973]
