The first coffee beans were grown in this town back in 1868 by John Smedley and his father-in-law, George Weiser. The now defunct Smedley Coffee Company was founded here in 1915 by two brothers who named their business after their father-in-law’s initials, JOS (John Smedley). In 1960, Bob Koffman opened his first shop here and quickly became known as one of Fremont’s most influential businessmen. He was responsible for helping to establish the city’s reputation as a center for coffee culture and commerce. Today, Bob's son Matt continues his father's legacy by running Koffman Coffee Company – one of Fremont's most popular businesses. In addition to its namesake product, Koffman Coffee also sells a variety of otherourmet items such as smoothies and coffees with flavors like raspberry extract or licorice root. Fremont is located on the borders of Kearney and Omaha counties and it is south of Omaha on Interstate 80. The area that would become Fremont was first settled by Europeans in 1847 as part of what would become Iowa Territory. The town was named after Captain George Custer, who had been killed in a skirmish with Native Americans near present-day Fremont in 1876. In 1881, the Laramie & Northern Pacific Railroad arrived in Fremont, giving rise to an early industrial base for the city. In 1907, Dramatics Workshop Productions moved from Sioux City, IA to open its own theater complex on Park Street called "Theaters at Park". The company produced plays such as "The Great Gatsby", " Titanic" and "A Tale Of Two Cities". In 1916, John Atherton founded American Water Works Company which built one of America's first water systems. Atherton also developed land adjacent to current day Fremont Boulevard that became Arden Hills mall which opened in 1967. Arden Hills Mall served as the nucleus for what would become today's downtown Fremont shopping district; this area now includes more than 250 stores including Macy's, Sears and JCPenney among others dating back to when these stores were all located within walking distance of one another on Park Street between Third and Fourth Streets NW
