Columbus, Nebraska is a small town in the Great Plains region of Nebraska. It is located in Lancaster County, about thirty-six miles (51 km) east of Omaha and fifty-six miles ( ninety-eight km) north of Sioux City. The population was 1,342 at the 2010 census. The town was founded by John C. Fremont in 1854 as Fort Armstrong on the edge of what is now Columbus Township. The name originated from Spanish missions built thereabouts by Franciscan missionaries in 1795–96 and 1800–1801. In 1881, Fort Armstrong was renamed Fort Donelson after General Andrew Jackson's victory over Mexico at Buena Vista Field during the Mexican-American War. In 1892, Columbus became a village when it incorporate as a city under the new Des Moines Constitution applied to towns with populations over 100 citizens. In 1912, it annexed neighboring villages of Wellington and Uniondale and changed its name to Columbus proper. This change followed approval by the Nebraska Legislature for a new city government to be form on an experimental basis within two years following an amendment to the state constitution that allowed cities with populations of 50 or more residents to become “cities” without first applying for charter from the Nebraska State Legislature. On November 3, 1920, Columbus became one of three cities – along with Lincoln and Kearney – incorporated into Omaha through annexation by that city; other two were Southfield and Hastingsville.[1] The City Council has adopted five resolutions recommending annexation since its creation: resolution proposing annexation on February 5th, 1924; resolution proposing annexation on October 15th 1921; resolution proposing annexation on January 28th 1922; resolution proposing annexation on December 12th 1922; Resolution endorsing incorporation into Omaha through annexation passed unanimously by both chambers onJune 25th 1926.[2] A total of 36 meetings were held between 1911 and 1966 when proposals were made for annexation although only eighteen resolutions were chosen to be acted upon because they included amendments which would have granted specific rights such as water rights or special tax privileges associated with cityhood status[3]. These related issues include: condemnation proceedings against properties adjacent to proposed city limits which may impact future growth including farms/ranches if annexation occurred; determination whether property values had increased enough since incorporation so that value proposition could be met justifying additionality fees levied uponproperty developers seeking inclusion within municipality boundaries
