The Columbus Coast Guard Station was founded in 1903 by Captain George H. Kapp and his crew. The station served as a lookout on the Omaha Harbor. In 1916, the Coast Guard purchased land at the mouth of Nebo River to build a new station. The current location is now known as the Columbus Coast Guard Station Pier. In the 1680s, French fur traders journeyed through this area and named it after Louisbourg which they located near modern day Sioux City, Iowa. The local Indian tribe called the Omaha used to live along the riverbanks but started moving away from white settlement in the mid 1800s because of growing population densities and encroachment from farmers onto their traditional hunting grounds
