Bellevue, Nebraska is a small town in east-central Nebraska that was founded on August 24, 1871 by C.W. Dodge and his wife Anna. The community was named for Bellevue, Washington, where Dodge had been born in 1845. In 1902 the city of Bellevue annexed the towns of Hope and Woodbury to its north and west, creating a larger metropolitan area which included most of eastern Nebraska. The population of Bellevue reached 10,000 in 1940 and 25,000 by 1970. Bellevue has experienced steady growth since then and now has a population over 40,000 residents. The downtown business district is one of the largest in Omaha County and contains several large businesses including Lincoln Savings Bank (founded 1914), Pacific Life Insurance Company (founded 1912), Zenith Broadcasting Corporation (formed 1951), Eastman Kodak Company (formed 1895) and American Weighing Machine Company (founded 1865). Bellevue is also home to two high schools: Bellevue Academy (established 1913) which serves students from pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade; and Bellevue High School (established 1909). There are also several smaller private schools within or adjacent to the city limits: Bellevue Intermediate School(opened 1915), Bellefontaine Elementary School(opened 1947), Villa Park Middle School(opened 1985) and Hillsborough Township Community Schools(opened 1984). In addition to its public school system, Bellevue also offers private schools through its Douglas Education District: Beloit Heights Elementary School(established 1954), Beloit Roosevelt Jr./Sr.#2 High School(established 1961), Dishman Junior/Senior High School( reopened 1976 after being closed for many years due to lack of space) and Northfield Independent Academy(( established 1988)). BellevUE's economy is based primarily on services provided by its three large commercial districts; these include retail trade with concentrations in professional services such as accounting, law enforcement/judicial work etc., medical supplies/ Equipment sales etc., as well as food service with restaurants scattered throughout the city limits catering specifically to seniors/young adults living alone or with children under twelve years old. Other significant sectors include transportation; trucking companies operate out of various warehouses located within or adjacent to the downtown business district; manufacturers have established manufacturing plants located near other areas within or adjacent to Omaha County; while numerous small businesses provide day-to-day needs such as plumbing repairs etc.; all major employers operating within one five blocks radius are considered economic engines supporting local job creation opportunities right outside their doors!
