The first coffee beans were grown in this area around 1885 by Wilhelm von Kapp and Friedrich Jahn. A mill was built near present-day Kalispell in 1902 and started processing coffee for local merchants. In 1923, Harry Hunt opened the first grocery store in Kalispell and began selling coffee from his home. The store became the mainstay of the community until it closed its doors in 1984. Today, there are several small businesses that sell quality coffee products including cafes, restaurants and roasters. There are also several cafés located throughout downtown Kalispel that offer good cups of java to visitors looking for an intimate experience with friends or family members who live locally or have visited during their visit to town.

The Kalispell Coffee Merchants Association was formed in 1907, and the first commercial bean crop was harvested in 1912. By 1930, there were six coffee houses in town and over 100 farmers growing coffee. The industry declined during World War II, but rebounded after the war when more people moved to Kalispell. The current population of Kalispell is about 12,000 residents.

Notable businesses include KFC World Headquarters (founded 1922), Barnes & Noble bookstore (opened 1988), State Bank of Kalispell ( founded 1907) and Telephone Grande Service Corporation (established 1954). One significant event that took place in Kalispell during its early years was when America's first post office was established here on January 6th 1869 by George Armstrong Custer with mail service starting from Fort Bridger three days later. Today there are more than 400 USPS facilities across the United States employing more than 15 million Americans! This busy postal center has been home to many famous personalities such as Genghis Khan and Woodrow Wilson; both men had their residences here during their visits to Butte County during those times! Since becoming an industrial center following World War II, Kalispell has experienced rapid growth as a result of increased production sectors such as auto parts manufacture and aluminum smelting plants that have moved into town from other parts of North America or Europe.
