Airforce gift history in Kalispell, Montana began in the early 1920s when Captain Edward J. Smith and his wife, Lillie, started the Air Force Alaskan Service Club. The club served as a social outlet for service members and their families. In 1928, the Air Force Base in Kalispell was established and the club became known as the Air Force Auxiliary Base Club. In 1941, Major General James Halsey took command of combat forces in World War II and commands were given to airmen from all over the world. One of General Halsey's orders was to provide gifts to airmen stationed abroad who had done good work during the war. As a result, the Air Force Auxiliary Base Club donated clothing, books, food items and other supplies to numerous military bases worldwide. In 1949-1950, Lt Colonel Charles W. Ducharme led an expedition that discovered Mt McKinley National Park within 50 miles of Kalispell. The park was designated by President Franklin D Roosevelt on November 20th, 1940 pursuant to Executive Order No. 9358 which allows for public land acquisitions within 10 miles of urban areas for national parks purposes Ducharme's exploration helped create opportunities for tourism in what is now Glacier National Park and he is considered one of its founders The first gift from Air Force Auxiliary Base Club was a $100 worth of candy bars sent carelessly to soldiers deployed overseas in World War II In 1951-1952 Lieutenant Colonel John Sibley collected mementos from USAAF pilots who had died during hostilities including uniforms and medals To date, more than $1 million has been donated by members of the Air Force Auxiliary Base Club according to donation records located at www.archives.gov/item/airforce-auxiliary-base-club

The first settler in what would become Kalispell arrived in 1872 and homesteaded on the east side of the Continental Divide near milepost 9 on the old route between Great Falls and Bonner City. In 1875 local residents organized to purchase 640 acres (248 hectares) of land from J.D. McKinney for $3 per acre ($). Kalispell, Montana is a small town in the Great Plains region of north-central Montana. The population was 2,362 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat for Butte County and part of the Kalispell–Butte, MT Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to see what is now Kalispell was Spanish explorer Alonso de Alvarado on his way from Santa Fe to Monterey in 1542. He named it San Francisco del Oro (the gold mine), but this name appears only once in print and that is as an abbreviation for "San Felipe de Nez Perdido," one of Don Vasco's expeditions overland from Mexico City to California in 1602-04. In 1862, John Dickey built a sawmill here which became one of America's most important lumber operations until World War II when it closed due to competition from Japan. Afterward, many people settled here and development followed a pattern typical of many towns during that time: A mill town would grow with its adjacent rural areas supplying wood products such as lumber, hay, potatoes and other agricultural goods; then the mills would become more specialized and eventually close; while some residents remained until they moved away or died young. One early resident was Angus MacDonald who arrived around 1868 after serving in the U.S Cavalry under General Pershing during the Mexican-American War. His store operated at 4th & Park Streets before moving to 5th Ave., south of downtown Kalispell where he continued to operate until his death in 1916 at age 81 years old - making him one of Kalispell's longest living residents." In addition to groceries shopping for settlers just outside their door on Main Street or down Fifth Avenue there were general stores like Fords & Hensons on First Avenue just east of downtown serving both locals and travelers alike with supplies such as flour, bacon, butter, eggs etc.; post office services (1879); school (1887); jail (1890). Coal mining began about 1900 but stopped by 1920 because high prices combined with contamination caused by black lung disease made it difficult to produce coal economically without causing health problems for miners." During World Wars I through III there were several military barracks located around town including Fort Heiligman near Fourth Avenue southeast; Camp Sherman northeast off US Highway 12; Fort Riley northwest off US Highway 12 across from Roosevelt Hotel;; ID Field Headquarters northwest off US Highway 12 opposite Post Office Terminal building) all used by local commands responsible for defense against Indian attacks or possible threats posed by Japanese forces operating along that border." The last large civilian employer in Kalipelgoslle was Joplin Lumber Company Limited which closed its doors in 1971 after decades providing jobs for men and women throughout central Montana." In recent years much redevelopment has taken place within walking distance of downtown including new housing developments (including two retirement villages), retail stores including numerous restaurants/cafeterias/bars/conveniences shops as well as an art center featuring several galleries/bargain shops/, an outdoor skatepark/fishing pier/, a multi-purpose sports arena/.
