In Great Falls, Montana, there has been a Police Department for over eighty years. The department was founded on December 4, 1892 by order of the governor. At that time, the town had only two officers and one constable. The first officer to be hired was John W. Bigham. The department grew rapidly and in 1896 it had six officers and one constable. In 1909, the department employed its first woman officer, Mrs. J.M. Banks. The growth of the department continued through World War I and into the 1920s when it hired its second woman officer, Mrs. Cleta Purdy Smith-Dunnigan. During World War II, Great Falls became an all-male police force with the enlistment of men from other towns in the area to help with patrols around the city limits until finally female officers were hired in 1945 as part of a larger effort to improve Intercommunity Relations within Great Falls City Limits Since then, femaleofficers have also worked at various other positions within the department including Sergeant (2001-present), Officers' Assistant (2007-2009), Patrol Officer (2010-present), Detective Sergeant (2015) and now Captain (2018). Chief Don Armstrong has stated that he plans on continuing this trend of increasing diversity throughout his tenure as Chief which will likely include hiring more women into administrative or supervisory roles in future years

By 1850, however, Great Falls had fallen out of favor as traders fromabroad began to focus their trade more heavily on established markets such as Oregon or California instead of secondary routes through Russia or Canada near Fort Benton (now Stroudsburg). In 1993, American Law Enforcement Officers’ Association (ALEA) created the Law Enforcement Gift History Committee to help preserve and celebrate the history of law enforcement gift giving throughout America. On July 25th, 1995 ALEA presented its First Annual Law Enforcement Gift History Awards at its Annual Meeting in New York City honoring individuals who have given back to their community through donated items or services. Winners were announced that evening by Mayor Rudolph Giuliani and Honorable James Estrada Jr., Deputy Mayor for Homeland Security and Justice Programs for New York City.
