It is part of the Great Falls, MT Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Great Falls was Elias Howe in 1872. He built a log cabin on the present site of Great Falls High School. In 1875, John Fetterman and his family moved to Great Falls from Illinois and began a flour milling business that became one of the largest employers in town. The growth of Great Falls led to an increase in housing development; by 1920, over 100 homes had been erected in what is now downtown Great Falls. In 1959, construction began on what would become Interstate 90 through central Great Falls and attendance at local schools increased as motorists reached nearby towns for goods and services not available within easy reach from downtown Great Fall
