In 1907, the city of Great Falls was organized and Great Falls became a city on December 1, 1907. The population of Great Falls increased rapidly during World War I, when war production increased in the area. However, the economic prosperity that followed did not last long after the war ended. The decline in the early 21st century led to a decline in population and economy throughout Greater Yellowstone County. Today, there is only 1 percent of its pre-2010 population remaining within Greater Yellowstone County. The history of Great Falls began with traders from Russia and Siberia coming through this region during the late 1800s looking for new markets for their goods. One such trader was Ivan Turgenev who arrived here in 1887 and founded what would become known as Russian Fortification Company (RFC). RFC built a fortification at what is now downtown Great Fallingsburg which served as an important trading post between Russia and America until it was destroyed by a fire in 1911. In 1915, RFC merged with other companies to form American West Mining Corporation (AWMC). AWMC leased land east of Glacier National Park from United States Forest Service for mining operations beginning on October 16th of that year. The first ore mined from this lease was coal which made AWMC one of the largest miners in America at that time; however, due to environmental problems associated with uranium mining later on at nearby Butte Narrows Mine also operated by AWMC these operations came to an end abruptly within just four years following construction of Butte Narrows Mine’s final structureclosure concessionaire on November 15th 1920 without any compensation from either company or anyone associated with them! A few years later on January 9th 1922 local farmers burned down RFC’s old mill buildings located off First Street north side due to issues surrounding finances caused by gold discoveries being made near Fargo ND while working under contract for American Goldwyn-Wernicke Copper Mines Ltd.; however nothing much happened until 1923 when Congress passed Public Law 594 which created US Geological Survey Land Areas Number 10 thru 14 within territorial boundaries around Yellowstone National Park including all present day parts of Greater Yellowstone County!
