Great Falls, Montana is a small town in the U.S. state of Montana. The population was 2,693 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Gallatin County and the largest city in that county by population size. The town began as a white settlement on the edge of Great Falls National Park in 1881, when General George Armstrong Custer and his army passed through on their way to campaign against Sitting Bull. The first post office opened in 1885. In 1902, Great Falls became an incorporated town with a population of 952 people; it had no vote until 1959. Great Falls has been home to several colleges and universities: Great Falls State University ( founded 1865 ); Northern Arizona University (1897); Montana Community College (1902), Valley College (1985) and Eastern Washington University (1994). Great Falls, Montana is a small town in the Great Plains of North America. It is located on the Missouri River, about 375 miles (600 km) south of Denver, Colorado and about 175 miles (300 km) north of Blackfoot, Montana. The population was 7,554 at the 2000 census. The first permanent inhabitant of Great Falls was George H. Smith in 1873. The present town was platted in 1881 when the railroad arrived to provide transportation for settlers moving westward from Kansas and Nebraska. The post office was established in 1886 and become a general store and mercantile district operation until it closed its doors in 1922. A new post office opened on July 1, 1924, and served as the town's commercial center until it closed its doors again in 1978. The community has seen many changes over its history including incorporation as a Micropolitan Statistical Area with John Day County on November 3, 2002; fire protection district status on October 15, 2006; annexation by Butte County on December 10, 2008; reestablishment of the Great Falls School District No. 4 effective January 1st 2009; establishment of an Independent School District No. 2 effective February 2nd 2009 with responsibility for all school functions within the scope of jurisdiction both before and after consolidation withDistrict No.1); reduction of size from 8 square miles to 3 square miles due to annexation by Butte County; expansion into unincorporated territory resulting from reestablishment of GHSD2 following consolidation with District No:1
