Great Falls, Montana is a city in the U.S. state of Montana and the county seat of Gallatin County. The population was 583 at the 2010 census. Great Falls became a city on February 15, 1995, when it merged with nearby Missoula. The two cities are both located in Gallatin County. The towns of Great Falls and Missoula were established by fur traders in 1855 as trading posts on the Yellowstone River between these two cities. In 1867, Great Falls became an incorporated town after its incorporation status was granted by the state legislature;missoula did not become an incorporated town until 1907. The first post office at Great Falls was established on July 10, 1855, under the name "Ft." George Washington Post Office; it served as Great Falls' primary mailing point for goods arriving from St., Pierre and Fort Peck territories east of the Missouri River. By 1860, greatfalls had a population of seventy-six residents and nineteen businesses; it had also constructed a steamboat landing to service travelers coming upriver from eastern Montana through present-day Bozeman and Missoula settlements. In 1861, gold was discovered near present day Whitefish Lake in what is now southeastern Montana; this led to increased shipping traffic along the Missouri River caused by prospectors seeking fortune in what would become known as "the Klondike Gold Rush". However, due to navigation difficulties encountered while crossing difficult rapids nearpresent day Glacier National Park (then part of Canada), only a few small boats reached civilization each year during this time period - most notably those owned or operated by James Wickersham: Wickersham's Ferry Company transported goods across rapids daily from Whitefish Landing on March 25th 1865 until his death in 1887 partially due to safety concerns brought about by miners stranded downstream during early winter weather conditions following his discovery of gold at Belle Fourche Creek northwest of Great Falls In 1870s & 1880s several other logging companies began operations around GREAT FALLS including Empire Mining Company (1870), Northern Mines (1878–79), Dyers Gulch Coal & Coke Co.(1880–81) & Steele Bros.(1884). One of the most recent changes occurred in 1992 when Congress created NMFS as part of President George H.W. Bush’s efforts to modernize America’s maritime infrastructure.
