Great Falls was founded in 1881 as a small mining town on Gardiner Creek by several enterprising businessmen from Great Britain who were looking for an opportunity to make money without having to mine coal or diamonds. By 1890, when railroad promoters laid track through Great Falls, it had become one of the most important mining towns in America because it had access to transportation and resources that other communities did not have. In 1916, when great Falls became a city Limits badge destination for people living outside its boundaries due to its geographic location within Cascade County limits only (the former boroughs of Missoula and Whitefish), Mayor Jock O'Connell spearheaded efforts among city officials to annex adjacent unincorporated areas east of Interstate 80 just south of downtown: Farmsdale Township (now parts of Whitefish) on the east side; Parkers Valley on the west side; and those portions now northwardly lying within present-day Great Falls Township on opposite sides of Gardiner Creek between Lakeside Road/Rte 1 (west) and East Lake Road/Rte 6 (east). In 1951, after years of annexation effort by various cities within Cascade County limits, Great Falls became an official incorporated city with all legal rights conferred upon it bylaws adopted Decatur County commissioners Feb 25th 1951 under authority vested therein by said commissioners from time immemorial as provided by law governing incorporation thereof hereinafter set forth...City Name changing effective date hereinabove cited was occasioned by motion made orally before said commission setting forth desire therefor made by Mayor Jock O’Connell then acting mayor...Cascade County Commissioners designated new corporate seal hereafter appearing below “GREAT FALLS” upon passage thereof being recorded in minutes book as required under law governing incorporation hereinbelow set forth As stated earlier this century real estate prices escalated quickly due primarily to lackadaisical planning which led some developers into overbuilding while other owners chose not evento build until they could afford better terms only later regretting their actions . This problem has been largely corrected during recent years although some developers still overextend themselves especially near I-80 Today many businesses are clustered around Downtown & Main Street while others have spread out throughout all aspects o ocasionally coming back into focus along Rte 6

Great Falls is an agricultural and forest town in eastern Montana, United States. The population was 9,842 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Great Falls County and the largest city in the county. The first people to live in what is now Great Falls were two groups of Athabascan hunters who came down from Canada during the early 1800s. They named their community after Great Falls in upper Canada, which they saw as a great natural reservoir for water resources. In 1868, General James Haggerty built Fort Haggerty on the current location of Great Falls City Hall to protect travelers coming through his military post on the Missouri River. During World War II, Great Falls became one of several American cities that furnished materiel for Air Force bombers flying strategic bombing missions over Germany and Japan. The city's infrastructure was also used to create artificial lakes for munitions production during this time period; these include Lake Superior and Lake Hughes.In 1951, when Interstate 80 was built through central Montana, Great Falls became part of its corridor; today it remains one of only a few cities along I-80 that still maintains full commercial services and social life despite being located more than 20 miles away from any major highway Thruway service
Great Falls, Montana was first settled in 1872 by George Armstrong Custer and his troops during the American Civil War. The town was named for Great Falls of the Missouri River, some 16 miles (25 kilometers) east of its current location.
