In 1903, McCurdy donated a piece of property to the town for use as an public square which later became known as McCurdy Square today. It lies within the Continental Divide National Scenic Area. The name "Butte" comes from the buttes that dot the landscape and were once used by Native Americans as hunting areas. The silver-colored arrowheads found throughout the area are evidence of early American trade with Asia. The first post office in Butte was established in 1876, and remained in operation until it closed in 1912. In 1898, Butte became a town under the provisions of an act of Congress entitled "An Act to Encourage Agricultural Development." This act provided for townshipgovernment with a mayor and five trustees who managed various aspects of local life including agriculture and infrastructure development. In 1916, Butte became one of only two townships to be created within Montana when it was divided into three districts pursuant to an act of the Territorial Legislature known as "An Act to Betterment Township Government". At this time, Butte had a population totaling just over 1,000 people; however, it would grow rapidly during World War II due to increased military activity nearby and increased agricultural production statewide. During World War II (1941-1945), Butte played host to more than 100 airmen who were interned at Fort Peck Army Air Field while they underwent training before being sent overseas. As part of its efforts to generate industry outside of Morehead City, Montana, Andrus County erected a steel plant adjacent to Camp Livingston on land donated by George Custer's widow; this plant would become one of America's largest producers of aluminum products during postwar years. This period also saw significant advances in education which led Toombs High School located adjacent to where Nowlan Airport now stands open both day and night for students from all walks of life interested in attending college or working on their farm or mechanic skillset; likewise many other schools sprung up across rural counties as enrollments exploded due to programs like WACS (World Bank College Service). The mine produced over 1 million pounds of silver ore per year when it operated from 1876 to 1912; however, production ceased because of low prices and competition from other mines in the area. In 1916, Butte Silver Bow became a city after residents removed their Rural Electrification Administration (REA) wires near downtown to make way for an electric light line that would run southward through town to service nearby mining communities like Golden Spike and Keystone City (now Keystone). The first streetlights were turned on in 1917; but due to World War I funding shortages, only two poles were erected outside town proper and all lights were powered by kerosene lamps until 1925 when an oil well was drilled near downtown resulted in renewed interest in silver mining and brought new development which led to increased traffic demand for municipal services such as water supply, trash collection, policing and firefighting; these demands caused inflationary costs associated with infrastructure improvements that made life more affordable for average citizens while also freeing up resources for more important objectives such as public safetyirtingalism during times of economic downturns or pandemics like bubonic plague which impacted throughout much of America at this time
