Butte Silver Bow is a small town in Butte County, Montana, United States. The population was 515 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Helena-MT Micropolitan Statistical Area. Butte Silver Bow was founded in 1875 as a mining community on a hill overlooking the now-defunct Big Hole Mine. The mine closed in 1916 and most of the town disappeared during World War I when mines were closed for lack of ore. However, some residents returned to live in their homes from 1918 until 1951. In 1954, Butte Silver Bow merged with nearby Pine Ridge to form what is now known as Butte-Pine Ridge Towne. In 1955, Butte-Pine Ridge Towne voters approved an ordinance establishing buttes as part of its municipal boundaries and electing a mayor and council members. By 1980, the buttes had become well known among Montanans for their valuable silver content in local coins and jewelry. Manufacturing operations stopped in 1984 due to low silver prices; however, some remains of these early businesses remain today including Anaconda (a copper mine) and HCN Minerals Co., Ltd., which manufactured products such as power generators andronic antennas used by NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC). Today's main industry is ranching which supports many jobs along with providing cultural attractions such as the Ponderosa Folk Museum & Gold Rush Museum open late April through October

The first white people to live in Butte County were pioneers who came from Oregon in 1864. They built a cabin on the headwaters of the Big Horn River and named their settlement after General George Armstrong Custer's cavalry unit which had fought at Little Bighorn. In 1868, settlers arrived from Kansas Territory and named their community after John A. Butte, one of the leaders of that territory. In 1893, silver was discovered near Butte and mining began soon afterward; it continued to be mined until 1971 when production was stopped due to low prices for silver. Today there are only a few scattered buildings left standing from when silver mining occurred here; most of what remains today is made up of ruins or post-and-beam structures dating back to the early 20th century. Today Butte Silver Bow is known as an archeological site because many interesting artifacts have been found here including Native American tools and weapons, European firearms and ammunition, handcarts withSilver content that reached unprecedented levels during this time period (1890s-1920), Anglo settler lifestyle items such as radios and phonographs (1910s),a Model T Ford (1914),an American football field (1920), a model train set (.pdf file) by JB Whitworth & Sons Inc., an electric tramway system built by the Northern Pacific Railway Company (1925).
