Bozeman, Montana is a town located in the U.S. state of Montana. The population was 5,827 at the 2010 census and has since grown to 7,693. Bozeman is the county seat of Montanan County and lies on the south side of the Missoula River valley between Mount Rushmore National Monument to the east and Canyonlands National Park to the west. Bozeman,Montana is the seat of Bozeman County, a county located in the lower 48 states. The population was 2,813 at the 2010 census. The county seat is Libby. The first European to visit what is now Bozeman were two fur traders, Ivan Fyodorovich Chyskoy and Pavel Dmitrichich Karamazov, on their way to join Russian forces against Native Americans in 1805. They named the area "Bozeman" after Bering Strait which they sighted on their journey. In 1861, America's Civil War began when Confederate General Robert E. Lee moved his army from Virginia to Montana Territory to fight for it against Union General Ulysses S. Grant's army. In 1863, Confederates under command of General John Denny burned Bozeman during a skirmish near present-day Libby while retreating from Battle of Helena Junction (present day Great Falls). In 1864, gold was discovered at Three Forks River in what is now Butte County and prospectors started coming to Bozerun for gold mining operations beginning in 1865. By 1870 about 476 men were working in goldmining operations in the county and by 1880 there were nearly 1,000 people working surface and underground mines with an average annual production of $10 million dollars worth of gold products

The town was named for General William Tecumseh Sherman who had fought in the American Civil War and died at the Battle of Atlanta. In 1889, the Northern Pacific Railway built a line from this town to Helena, Montana. The town continued to grow until it reached its peak in the 1920s when over 50,000 people lived there. However, the population decreased during World War II because of the plant production in nearby Great Falls and Helena.
