Bozeman, Montana is a small town in the Rocky Mountains of western Montana. The population was 2,914 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Bozeman County and one of its six municipalities. The first European settlers arrived in what is now Bozeman in 1875, when United States Army Lt. Col. John Tilton founded Fort Missoula on the Blackfoot River. The town was named after General James A. Garfield, who won an important victory against Mexico in that year's presidential election as part of America's San Miguel Expedition. In 1900, Bozeman became a county seat and began to grow rapidly as a mining and agricultural center for gold and other minerals around the basin formed by the Missoula River and Yellowstone National Park. In 1902, President Theodore Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9802 which ordered all Native Americans living within five miles (8 km) of any white settlement to leave or be removed from their land without compensation. This order led to large-scalenative reclamation projects which added over two million acres (1,200 km2) to present-day Bozeman County between 1901 and 1910 alone; these operations resulted in a dramatic increase in population growth across much of rural Montana while reducing area consumed by traditional Indian land use patterns previously allowed under treaty agreements between American Indians and Ulysses S Grant's government. Bozeman, Montana is a small town in the rural region of central Montana. The population was 5,813 at the 2010 census. The townsite was laid out in 1900 by Samuel Bowles and named after Bozeman, Montanan's first Territorial Governor. It grew rapidly during the early 20th century due to farming and ranching activity, but declined following World War II when many people moved away for economic opportunities in nearby cities. Since the late 1990s, however, tourism has become an important part of Bozeman's economy and its population has grown steadily since 2000. Bozeman was founded by militia members from Montana Territory who had been ordered to march into Leadville to capture British Lieutenant-Governor John McLaughlin. The town developed quickly because of its location on a wagon road linking Fort Benton with White Sands Junction on theboom Creek (now Broadwater Creek). In 1902, thanks to a donation from local rancher Orville Sprague, Bozeman became one of the few communities in Western Montana built on water supply rather than land grant offers. Although white settlement began in earnest around 1880 near present-day Bozeman proper, it wasn't until 1892 that entrepreneurs decided to build stores and churches hereabouts due to booms in gold prices and railroad development potential. By 1901 there were 10 businesses employing 135 people living within what would become known as "The Great Town". Shortly after independence from United States control came in 1912 as part of the Big Game Treaty between Canada and America; Bozemenians were allocated 640 acres (240 hectares) along Sandy Creek east of downtown for cavalry barracks housing American troops garrisoned there during World War I; this area now includes most of downtown and much of Broadway/Lake Avenue north thereof. After World War I ended there was increased demand for labor throughout Northwest Montana so farmers opened up their holdings into ranches; this led to another boom in boomerang industries such as agriculture (farming had been responsible for over 60%of GNP growth nationally before 1910), mining (the lead industry being particularly intensive), logging (a major employer hereabouts), transportation services (the railways becoming increasingly important), paper production (an emerging boom concurrent with aluminum production throughout Northwest) and light manufacturing including shoe manufacture although other mills closed down during these years due to lack of competition or simply falling prices for substitutes available at that time. Although some foundries did open up again during this time period they all failed within five years thereaftermainly because government regulation caused output levels at traditional industrial plants to drop sharply while new technologies soon replaced traditional methods regardless of cost overruns despite claims otherwise by men like GE president Alfred Sloan who trumpeted technological progress). During these years some fine streets were laid out such as Broadway/Lake Avenue which ran northeast from center downtown past Grand River Street before turning southeastward crossing rapids onto Deadhorse Lake before continuing northwestward through farmland watered by Union Pacific Railroad rights-of-way ending at Brushy Draw near current day Interstate 80 just southwest thereof beyond which lay oil fields heavily exploited since1920 thereby adding insultingly large costs annually both monetarily & socially associated with environmental degradation not only though direct human impact but also via indirect social costs suffered by numerous families uprooted directly or indirectly resultant curtailment or elimination economically significant portions their homesock lifestyles resulting thereby plus loss—albeit partial—in quality & quantity life enjoyment generally enjoyed hitherto prior thereto notwithstanding occasional efforts made on behalf OFA's part “to restore” aspects now discernible ecowateration]
Bozeman, Montana was founded in 1903 by James W. Bozeman and his brother-in-law, William A. Hinds. The town was named after Bozeman's father, David Bozeman. The first post office in the town was opened in 1904. In 1907, the Bozemen established a Methodist church at what is now Bullfrog Park. In 1914, the community had a population of about 350 and a schoolhouse serving grades K-8 was built at what is now Rural Road 5A west of downtown Bozeman.
