New settlers continued to come for many years until all but one farmstead in Wildwood were abandoned during the Great Depression. 2 miles northwest of Wildwood is Pigeon Forge National Monument which was founded on August 17th 1870 by General James Hance as part of his effort to make land available for white settlement throughout Indian Territory under the Morrill Act. Wildwood, Missouri is a small town located in Clay County, Missouri. The population was 771 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1856 by John Denton and his wife Emma. Wildwood is named for wild walnuts that grew on his family's farm. It had a post office from 1858 to 1865. In 1870, Wildwood incorporated as a village. Wildwood lost its incorporation status in 1906 but kept its name until it discontinued operations in 1978. The first settlers of Wildwood were Joeseph and Sarah White who married in 1836 and moved to what is now called "Emmalyn". They raised five children there before moving to Clay County where they became farmers. By 1850, the Whites had removed all their children to new homes in order to start anew with just Joe Sr., age 22, and his pregnant wife Emmalyn remaining behind to continue farming the land that would later become Wildwood. Joe Sr.'s death two years later left Emmalyn with three young sons: James A., Joseph B., and Samuel Landon Jr., age 10-12; however, 4-year old Samuel survived him when he died of pneumonia while working on the farm one day after haymaking according to some sources; this account does not agree with other sources which claim that Samuel was killed by frostbite during an early winter storm near the White home (Burden 1951). In 1860, James A./Samuel Landon Jr./John Denton bought 640 acres (2 km²) of land from Elijah Webb for $1 cash only as part of a larger purchase including 6 acres (2 km²) of swampy ground above present day Main Street between Lebanon Road and Broadway Boulevard known then as "Webb's Swamp." This land would come into being known as "Wildwood" after John Denton's older son who developed it with help from Andrew Jackson Polk who donated 8 3/4 acres (3 ha), or 60 percent of the total parcel purchases totaling 136 2/3 acres (7 km²) across 9 tracts totalling 1 acre (0.40 ha). Polk also donated seed money towards development which would be used for planting trees on most of these tracts leading upriver towards modern day Columbia City Landing Park today home to Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport just south of town limits gridlocked traffic ). The physical growth around Old Hickory Lake following construction along I-70 came about largely because people migrating westward settled nearby Big Lake Township east of present day Fort Leonard Wood Interstate Avenue .
