West Plains, Missouri is a town in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,552 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The land that would become West Plains was first inhabited by the Hennepin group of Native Americans. They were forced from their homes in 1764 and relocated to what is now Uniontown, Illinois after the French and Indian War. In 1811, Colonel John Jacob Astor purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) of what would become West Plains from the Hennepin tribe for $5 per acre. He named it "Astoria" after his sister's home in New York City. In 1827, when Missouri became a state, Astoria was set aside as the capital of Jackson County and became known as "West Plains". The town grew rapidly during this time and by 1830 had over 2,000 residents. In 1834, local voters approved a Town Charter which made West Plains an incorporated city with its own mayor and council members; however incorporation did not take place until 1861 due to legal challenges brought against it by neighboring towns who felt they had greater claim to be called "city" because they had more than 2200 residents at the time. During World War II, many workers came to work on WSM Radio's manufacturing plants in nearby Carbondale; however all production stopped in 1945 due to war-time restrictions on radio manufacture After the war ended many people left for various reasons including termination of federal contracts or changes in technology which caused layoffs throughout Western Europe . A few families stayed but lost their land so they could no longer build houses on top of ancient earthworks like those around Carbondale . However others decided to start fresh on what was once their former farmsteads while some reclaimed abandoned buildings or built new ones using available resources such as metal roofs salvaged from other businesses closed down during prohibition days

As of 2019-2021 there is no current plan for redevelopment or growth within the town but plans are being made for future events like concerts or pavilions that could be erected near downtown area .
