When the Missouri National Guard was founded in 1907, it was a response to a request from Governor James K. Polk for help in quelling a civil war-related uprising in Kansas. The Guardsmen were initially organized into companies, but by 1912 they had been reorganized into regiments. The first national guard regiment to be activated in West Plains was the 1st Missouri Infantry Regiment on December 15, 1914. The 1st Missouri Infantry Regiment saw combat during World War I and played an important role as part of the American Expeditionary Force (AEF) that fought abroad. After the war, the regiment was stationed at Camp Chase near St. Louis before being relocated to Fort Leonard Wood, MO in 1921. In 1932, the regiment became known as 1st Battalion, 8th Regiment National Guard and served as such until 1937 when it returned toWest Plains and became 3rd Battalion, 5th Regiment National Guard. In 1951, while still located at Fort Leonard WoodMOthe battalion became 4th Battalion (National Guard) of the Missouri Army National Guard and served with distinction through all three branches of service until its activation as part of Operation Hastings on November 16, 1960 which led to the end of military service for most West Plains residents male citizens over 21 years old who resided within 10 miles of Springfield MO except for active duty military members assigned outside their home state or country serving under orders from higher headquarters outside those states limits In 1965 Operation Neptune's Spear resulted in an overthrow of South Vietnam's government which placed American forces inside South Vietnam providing security for United States citizens living there including many soldiers from our own 1st Battalion 8th Regiment who were also local residents These days one can find numerous items related to national guard history stored at various places across America including West Plains Mo where these items are often displayed alongside artifacts from local Native American cultures

West Plains was founded in 1838 by Captain John A. Blair, a fur trader and member of the Missouri Territorial Legislature. The town sprang up around a fording point on the Arkansas River, which made it convenient to trade with the surrounding cattle country. The first settler in West Plains was John Fenton, who arrived in 1839. He built a cabin on the edge of what is now town square. Fenton's wife, Sarah, ran a boarding house and grocery store in the early years ofWest Plains' growth. They also raised chickens and pigs. In 1845, Isaac McCoy settled at nearby Bellefontaine after traveling through Missouri on his way to Oregon. McCoy had heard about wagon trains moving overland from Kansas City to St Louis and he decided to move there too. He found land east of present-day West Plains on which he built a cabin and started trading goods with Indian traders. In 1847, James Purdy arrived from Illinois with his family and began farming nearpresent-day Mount Pleasant Springs before homesteading at West Plains in 1848. By 1850, Purdy had three buildings: a log cabin (now known as the Purdy House), an adobe brick building (now called the United Methodist Church), and a subscription farm that grew into what is now called cornmeal field #5."Purdy's" land extended downriver past present-day Booneville into western Randolph County where he erected two houses (the one today known as Old Main) between Ashley Creek and Big Sandy Creek for use as stores or offices while he operated his ranching business." When Kansas City became an independent state in 1861, West Plains lost its incorporation into that city but still retained its status as an unincorporated community under territorial jurisdiction." During World War I, American forces were quartered at Bellefontaine until late 1918 when they departed for Camp Dodge west of Independence; then they withdrew back eastward again until their departure finally reached Bellefontaine about Thanksgiving Eve 1918." Home Guard troops camped overnight at Bellefontaine from Dec 9th thru 12th 1918" In 1922 Joe Boggs organized "The Citizens' Union", later renamed "West Plains Civic Association". That year Boggs staged "A Pioneer Day Celebration" . On May 10th 1923 WPA workers came to town for six days participating in various projects such as restoring sidewalks downtown; painting public buildings; grading dirt roads; erecting bridges etc... During this time many businesses closed because of lack of funds but most reopened within weeks with new staff/owners
West Plains was founded in 1784 by James Callender. It was named for a hill in the town. The first post office was established in 1822. The town experienced several waves of population growth and decline during the 19th century. In 1871, it became an incorporated village. From 1885 to 1907, West Plains was a consolidated municipality with neighboring Clayton. On July 1, 1907, West Plains turned its entire municipal government over to Clayton County as part of a consolidation plan that eliminated most villages within Clayton County.
