West Plains is a small town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,724 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1837 by George Washington and his family as West Plains Station on the Chouteau Branch of the Missouri River. In 1846, it became part of Springfield when that city was established. On December 12, 1861, President Abraham Lincoln issued an executive order to rename West Plains "Springfield" in honor of his former home state's capital city. The town remained the name of its municipal government until it lost its charter in 1917 and reverted to its original name following a referendum vote by residents. According to the United States Census Bureau, West Plains has a total area of , all land. As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 1,569 people, 472 households, and 312 families residing in the town. The population density was 3 people per square mile (1/km²). There were 533 housing units at an average density of 2 per square mile (0/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 97% White; 0% African American; 0% Native American; and 2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latinoof any race were 1%of the population

West Plains is a town in Buchanan County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,665 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis–Saint Louis metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in West Plains was David Rice in 1820. The town's first post office was established in 1830. In 1834, it became the county seat of Buchanan County and remained so until 1907 when Kansas City took over that role. The railroad arrived in 1872, and by 1900 much of what makes West Plains unique has been built up around the railroad station and businesses on Center Street. In 1906, an act to create a new municipality for central Buchanan County failed to pass both the House and Senate but did succeed in getting it placed on a ballot for ratification by voters. On November 3rd, 1906, voters approved the incorporation of West Plains as a village with a population of 400 residents; however this attempt at municipal government failed to gain wide support and it reverted back to its earlier plat form two years later when another vote failed to ratify it as an incorporated village with a population of 100 residents only due to lack of funds from local leaders. After years of decline and abandonment throughout most of the 20th century (due primarily to poor planning and zoning decisions), some revival began during the late 1980s when developers resurrected plans for large-scale housing developments on land once used for agricultural purposes such as dairy farms or chicken coupes operations; these projects ultimately proved unsuccessful but have since received renewed attention from developers who believe they can be repaid through tax breaks or other advantages available under state zoning laws governing suburban development in Missouri Today, West Plains is one of several communities located within St. Louis–Saint Louis metropolitan area which enjoy significant economic benefits from its proximity to employment centers including downtown Saint Louis and Lambert International Airport; while efforts are ongoing to redevelop many derelict properties within town limits (mainly along Center Street) into mixed-use development opportunities incorporating modern amenities such as parks, shopping malls/nerds bars/restaurants etc., there is no doubt thatance that West Plains constitutes an important cultural center within this larger region
West Plains was founded in 1824 by George Washington Downing and his brother-in-law, Elijah White. The town was named for the high ground overlooking it on which it was located. Downing built a sawmill, gristmill, post office, and other businesses in the town. In 1830, West Plains became part of Callaway County. The first school in West Plains was opened in 1827 by Dr. James Blythe and Rev. John Sibley. The school operated until 1859 when it closed because of financial difficulties. In 1868, the Sherman Act increased federal land grants to Missouri from 3 to 6 million acres; this made West Plains an incorporated town with a government that could provide services such as education and infrastructure development. In 1870, the town's first telephone line came into service. In 1874, President Ulysses S Grant visited West Plains and awarded it a free land grant of 640 acres near present day Springfield after visiting Callaway County where he had been governor at the time. In 1886, five families from Illinois settled in West Plains; these were the first non-native Americans to live permanently in what is now Missouri since its admission into the Union as a state in 1880. The early years of settler life were difficult due to lack of resources and limited transportation options outside of Callaway County; however, over time these challenges have led to success for the community as it has become an important economic center within Missouri Valley Region
