West Plains is a small town in Greene County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,200 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, MO–Kansas City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that would become West Plains was first settled by Scots-Irish people in the late 18th century. In 1839, James Waddell and his brothers purchased what is now known as "Waddell's Purchase", consisting of land east of the Kaskaskia River on which they built a log cabin and began to cultivate crops. In 1840, John Neely purchased from James Waddell and continued to operate the farm until his death in 1865. Thereafter, it passed through several hands before becoming part of the Maher family's holdings in 1872. The Maher family sold portions of their holdings to other families until 1893 when it became part of the Addison estate's ownership. In 1907, interest in farming developed around West Plains due to its location near both Kansas City and Springfield. David Addison founded Addison Grain Company here in 1907 as one response to this demand for fresh produce within driving distance for residents of both cities. As production grew over time, so too did demand for space; by 1928 there were six buildings on Main Street alone! To keep up with growing production (and demand), Addison hired two additional workers per day during peak hours—a unheard-of feat at that time! Today Addison Grain Company remains an important local institution and employs many locals still today throughout its various operations including product packaging and shipping/distribution initiatives worldwide! West Plains is a small town in the Ozarks of Missouri, United States. It lies about 25 miles southeast of Springfield and 15 miles northwest of Hannibal. The town was founded in 1814 by Captain Abel West and his family as a farming community on the banks of the Little Missouri River. By 1880, West Plains had a population of 350 people. In 1902, the townsite was transferred from Union County to Clay County, Kansas. In 1920, West Plains was renamed after Abel West's father-in-law, George Waddell Westbrook. The town has since shrunk again; its current population is just over 100 people. The first settlers in what is nowWest Plains were Captain Abel West and his family who came from Illinois in 1814 fording the Little Missouri River on their way to build a post office at this location (now Springfield). They named their new community "West Plains" because they thought it would be more likely to get good crops if located near other villages or rivers. The first store opened in 1817 and soon afterwards Telephone Exchange No 1 was built which served as the nucleus for many early businesses including woolen millinery and blacksmithing shops until it closed down around 1903 when telephone service became available everywhere within easy walking distance! In 1820, George Waddell Westbrook moved to what is nowWest Plains from Topeka, Kansas with his wife Sarah Pemberton Westbrook and six children under age 10 after purchasing 640 acres (247 hectares) of land east of present day Hannibal on which he planned to establish a large cotton plantation called "New Holland". However due to financial difficulties caused by an extended drought that struck Kansas during these years, New Holland failed to take off commercially and eventuallyclosed its doors in 1830 - one year before Abrams Plantation did so too! A few years later another attempt was made by Mr & Mrs Westbrook to start a cotton plantation but this time they managed only 6 bales/acre (2 tons/hectare) resulting in them being forced out of business within 3 years! This failure not only discouraged others from Tycoon Cotton but also provided some interesting historical insight into local attitudes towards slavery during these times! dampness plagued northwestern Missouri during this time period making all sorts of things impossible such as raising corn or planting beans etc.; much like it does today!! George Waddell Westbrook returned home briefly after traveling back East following Kansas' admission into Confederation in 1861 before dying suddenly at age 47 while visiting family members east of Hannibal on October 5th 1865 just two weeks shy of his 62nd birthday!!! As far as we can tell he never fully recovered from his sudden death however Sarah continued running her household until her own death 7 years later at 83 years old!!!!! She is buried next door adjacent to her husband's remains!!!!

The town's growth led to its first school, West Plains Academy, being built in 1840. The academy quickly became one of the most popular schools in West Plains. In 1849, the Iowa Canal was completed and greatly improved transportation on the Missouri River. This led to a surge in trade and business for West Plains. In 1860, construction began on what would become known as Union Pacific Railroad Station in West Plains. This station would play an important role throughout the history of West Plains because it allowed for goods to be transported easily from East Stroudsburg to Kansas City. The town also experienced rapid growth after the American Civil War ended in 1865. In 1870, a new courthouse and jail were built in West Plains and this helped increase traffic into and out of the town. The town continued to grow until it reached its peak around 1910-1920 when census data shows that population had decreased by 50% due to factors such as agriculture becoming more efficient and migration away from Midwest cities during this time period. However, despite these declines,West Plain continued to thrive thanks largely to its economic stability which has remained unchanged over time
