The firstArmy detachment stationed in West Plains was called the "Gift Troop" and was composed of six soldiers from Fort Scott, Kansas. This detachment served as a goodwill ambassador for the city of West Plains and donated items such as clothes, candy, flour, milk and other supplies to local businesses. In 1896, an additional detachment called the "Souvenir Battalion" was established and consisted of ten soldiers from Council Bluffs, Iowa. This battalion helped distribute donated items to military and civilian troops stationed throughout Missouri. By 1902, the Army had deployed gifts totaling over 1,500 items to units located in twenty-four states! From 1902-1911, the "GiftTroop" served as the primaryArmy delegation responsible for gifting goods and services to military installations all across America! During World War I (1914-18),West Plains enjoyed a period of prosperity thanks to its strategic location within easy reach of both Europe and Mexico City. Many factories expanded their operations during this time due to wartime demand for munitions. As a result, many small businesses were able to survive thanks to donations from Army personnel. In 1916 alone, Army detachments distributed more than 2,000 gifts total! Thanks in part to this generosity during wartime times, West Plains became known as "the City that Gave." They named their new settlement after an old plantation on the Arkansas River in Louisiana where they had been employed as slaves. The first post office was established in 1838, and by 1840, the town had a school and three stores. In 1849, WFCO began transmitting radio signals from West Plains to other towns in Boone County. By 1870, WFCO had developed into one of the most important radio stations in Missouri because it could reach far beyond its immediate area with its signals. In 1912, WFCO became one of the first stations to air live television broadcasts from Tulsa, Oklahoma; this was also one of the first times that live television transmissions were made from a major American city. In 1967, WDAN began broadcasting digital broadcast signals from West Plains; this allowed for more widespread distribution of information than traditional FM stereo broadcasts could provide. In 2001, WDAN withdrew its analog signal and replaced it with digital service; this provided an opportunity for West Plains to become fully digitized during what has been called "the golden age of broadcasting." Today, West Plains remains an important community within Boone County because it provides services such as retail sales and real estate agents; however, its biggest contribution may be its role as home to KWIF-TV which airs local news and opinion programming as well as national programs such as "The Daily Show."
West Plains was a small community in Missouri, located on the west side of the Missouri River. It was founded by Latter-day Saints in 1836, and grew to become one of the largest settlements in the region. The community had a population of about 350 people when it was destroyed by a fire in 1871.
