Wentzville is a small town in Boone County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2000 census. Wentzville is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The name came from Wenzeville Township in Pennsylvania which had been named for George Washington's brother-in-law Benjamin Wentz (1745–1820). A post office called Wentzville was established in 1851, and remained open until it closed on November 15, 1907. Wentzville became a city on July 1, 1904. It amalgamated with St Louis on January 5 of that year to form the Greater St Louis Area commercial center complex under Mayor James Ralston's leadership. In 1976, it merged with Independence City to become the second largest city in Missouri after Kansas City; however this merger did not last and went into effect only October 1st when Independence City reverted to its own independent status again On February 10th of this year residents voted by referendum to secede from the Greater St Louis Area and merge back into Independence City once again as an urban area governed by a mayor/council system instead of one under which all elected officials were appointed by Mayor Ralston himself
