Wentzville is a small town in Clay County, Missouri, United States. The population was 2,753 at the 2010 census. Wentzville is located on the east bank of the river West Fork of the Missouri River. It is part of St. Louis City Centre. The first settlement in what became Wentzville was made in 1836 by John and Nancy Wentz from Pennsylvania. The name derived from an old Shawnee word meaning "place where they hunted." In 1837, George Washington Carver made an unsuccessful attempt to found agrarian society there and moved his family to nearby Dexter in Clay County to continue their experiment with raising crops on some 200 acres (100 ha). In 1840, George Carver's son-in-law John Brown founded another grange here which he named after himself, Brownstown Township. In 1847, Nicholas Fairchild moved his farmstead here from Audubon Township and laid out a section called Fairchildtown on land donated by him and others including Samuel Hahnemann who had been educated at Yale University and then owned several hundred acres (200 ha) along the west bank of the West Fork of the Missouri River near present day Wentzville. By 1850, about 150 farmers lived in or around what is now Wentzville with a total production of up to 3 million bushels (about 24 tons) of corn per year; wheat also grew very well hereabouts under free irrigation systems brought over from Illinois during this time frame. In 1855, when Randolph County was organized into Clay County, part of it lay withinpresent daySt LouisCity Centreand so much development took place within that area that by 1870 it had become known as "The Square Mile".
