Wentzville is a small town in the central region of Missouri, United States. The population was 2,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The first settler in Wentzville was John Wentz, who arrived in 1820 from Pennsylvania. In 1830, he founded a tannery and post office here with his family name. The Wentzes left Wentzville in 1836 to found a new settlement called Glen Carbon which still exists today as a small community about northeast of Wentzville on the banks of the White River. In 1838, George Washington Carver (1814-1888) became one of the first Americans to settle in what is now Wentzville when he purchased 4 acres (1 hectare) near Glen Carbon for $25 and built himself a cabin there. Carver soon began operations as an agriculturalist and later became known as America's leading seed dealer and farmer. In 1865, he donated land to build GlenCarbon High School which remains open to this day as one of St. Louis' most popular educational institutions
