Wentzville is a town in Johnson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,594 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from George Wentz, an early settler. For many years, Wentzville was a manufacturing center for ammunition and other munitions products. In recent decades it has become a bedroom community for the surrounding city of Kansas City. The first settlers in what would become Wentzville were Levi Coffin and his family in 1836. By 1840 they had two families living there: the Beavers and the Hennigans. In 1845, George & Lucy Wentz bought 640 acres of land (now part of Kansas City) from John Brown and founded their own town on the site of present-day Wentzville. They named it after themselves and built a small log courthouse on Warrenton Street near Walnut Creek Road in 1847-48. In 1861, when Johnson County was created, Wentzville became one of its six townships; it remained that way until 1870 when it became an independent dry township under state control. During this time, munitions production increased significantly as Union troops moved through Johnson County to fight in the American Civil War; by 1865 went had produced over 1 million rounds of ammunition alone! Wentzville is a small town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,818 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield–Blue Grass Metropolitan Statistical Area. Wentzville has been home to a Methodist Episcopal Church since 1853 and a Baptist church since 1871. The post office was established in 1851 and named for Reverend James Wentz, who had come from Kentucky as a missionary for the Methodists in 1840. The first white settler in Wentzville was John Crain on July 8, 1836. He built a log cabin on the banks of the White River about two miles (3 km) northeast of present-day Wentzville. A post office was established at Goettlerville on December 12, 1837, and called Crainesville because it served both those settlements until it was moved to Weedon on May 10, 1861 (becoming Weedon). The first store in Wentzville opened on October 5, 1861. The first school in Wentzville was organized by Mrs. Nancy Fenton on November 7, 1861; it became known as Mrs. Cook's School after Mrs.(then) Miss Nancy Cook opened her school there in 1865-66. A fire destroyed most of the buildings around this time so no classes were held that winter; however with help from some residents Mr.(then) David Hogue rebuilt most of what remained during 1863-64 Classes were again held that fall when new buildings were erected including one for $2 per month which served until 1905 when it burned down again due to lack of maintenance On October 9th 1865 Rev(erious Charles) Gardner preached his last sermon at Mrs.(now) Miss Anna Ponce de Leon Elementary School before moving into his new building located east of Main Street across from Gretsch's Brewery where he began practicing law January 1st 1896 After service at Gretsch's he purchased an additional acreage south of Main Street along Wabash Avenue now known as Gardner Place which supported several other businesses until his death August 25th 1921 In memory of his long standing friend Judge George Washington Gardner
