In the early 1800s, Webster Groves was a small town in Missouri. It was known for its large plantations and for the Marines who served in the United States Marine Corps. The Marines developed a close relationship with their local community, and many of them became citizens. This tradition continues to this day, with Marines giving back to their community through donations of gift history items and memorabilia. The first Marine detachment arrived in Missouri in 1814. The detachment was composed of men from Company I, 4th Regiment of Artillery. From then on, there were periodic Marine detachments stationed in Webster Groves until 1861 when Missouri seceded from the Union. The last Marine detachment left Webster Groves on December 10th, 1865. Today, the Marines maintain a strong connection to their local community by donating gift history items and memorabilia to various charities and events throughout the year. Webster Groves is a small town in Webster County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,836 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hannibal-St. Joseph Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit the area that is now Webster Groves was Captain John Smith on his trip from St. Louis to Fort Maria della Fortuna in 1764. He named the area "Webster Grove" after Samuel Webber, one of his assistants on this expedition. A post office called Webster Grove was established in 1806, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1814, General James Kinsman laid out a place for farmers on what would become the town square today known as Main Street between Center and State Streets (now Elm and Maple Streets). The village had no schools or churches until after 1830 when a schoolhouse was built on Main Street by Ebenezer Higgins along with three other buildings (the current courthouse sits on this site). In 1830, Amos Sibley arrived from Illinois with his family and started trading goods with local Indians at what became known as Sibley's Trading Post (later renamed Indian Hill). This business continued until about 1840 when Amos died suddenly leaving behind several children who were then forced to leave their father's trade because of Indian raids into their territory which also included Webster Grove. On July 4th, 1838 an act of Congress designated Webster Groves as a center for agricultural production due to its location adjacent to new canals being dug by Major General Oliver Wolcott during the Jacksonian era for irrigation purposes only - never used for industrial purposes! Consequently, many homes and businesses were built around this time including: Grange-Four Corners Store & Tavern; Wagon Wheel Inn; North German Mill & Warehouse; Lighthouse #1; Lighthouse #2; Mount Olivet Baptist Church & Cemetery; Methodist Episcopal Churchyardigger’s Shop (now Grange-Four Corners Store); Masonic Temple / National Hotel/Osprey’s Pub & Eatery; Ford’s Theater / Masonic Hall / Webster Groves Academy/Shawarma House In fact most of these structures still exist today including: Grange-Four Corners Store & Tavern still stands next door to Wagon Wheel Inn while North German Mill & Warehouse has been replaced by Shawsarma House across Elm Street from Ford’s Theater ; Masonic Temple / National Hotel / Osprey’s Pub& Eatery is currently located inside the old jail building across State Street from Grange- Four Corners Store ; Shawarma House which once stood just east of Interstate 44 just south of Jerome Avenue now resides behind Grange-Four Corners store across Elm street from IH 44 . From 1838 through 1860 there were over 20 businesses operating within walking distance of each other in downtown Webster Grove ! Today only four remain – Grange-Four Corners store remains open next door to Wagon Wheel inn while North German mill has been replaced by Shawsarma house across Elm street from Ford’s theater ; Masonic Temple / National Hotel located inside old jail building across State street fromGrange4Cornersstore
