The Webster Groves Air Force Base is home to the Missouri Air National Guard's 421st Airlift Wing, which is responsible for providing airlift support to a wide area in the Midwestern United States. The wing has been stationed at the base since 1951 and was activated on July 1, 1955. It was redesignated as the 421st Fighter Wing on December 2, 1957 and it became part of the Missouri Air National Guard Command on October 1, 1959. On February 17, 1961, it was transferred from ANG control to Joint USAF/USAF Tactical Air Command (TAC). The wing's name was changed again to 411th Fighter Wing on November 10, 1966 due to its affiliation with Patrick AFB in Illinois. In 1974-75 the wing underwent a modernization program that included the addition of F-4C Phantom IIs and F-15E Strike Eagle aircraft. In 1987-88 an upgraded command center and control system were installed and in 1990-91 new Hangar 3A replaced aging Hangar 2A. In 2002-03 an upgrade of mission capabilities including AIM-9X Sidewinder missiles occurred. As part of this project funds also were appropriated for construction of a new hangar which will become operational in 2006 titled 'Hangar 21'. This hangar will be able to house up to 54 military aircraft including F-16 Fighting Falcon fighters as well as KC135 tankers and tanker squadrons flown by EMBrae Inc.'s KC135 Stratotanker fleet. On January 16, 2009, during Operation Neptune's Spear air strikes against targets inside Afghanistanlocal 705th Airlift Wing flying Cessna 172s provided aerial refueling services for coalition forces operating inside Afghanistan while also performing other missions assigned by Headquarters USAAF Central Command Support Element Afghanistan (HQCENTCOM SEAE) located at Bagram AB outside Kabul Province

The Missouri Air National Guard's 122nd Fighter Wing is the current recipient of an air force gift. The wing was founded on December 8, 1942, when the Missouri Army National Guard's 171st Fighter Squadron was activated at Randolph Field in St. Louis. On January 1, 1943, it became the 62nd Fighter Squadron and assigned to Second Air Force at Grand Central Airport in New York City. It flew Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter planes from bases around the country untilactivated on September 15, 1945.

Webster Groves was founded in 1839 by John Webster and his family. The town became one of the largest in Missouri when it incorporated as a city in 1907. It lost its status as an independent city after voting to join the St. Louis metropolitan area in 1995.

Webster Groves is a city in Clay County, Missouri, United States. The population was 7,503 at the 2010 census. The city was founded in 1838 by Emmons Webster and his brother James Webster. It was named for John Webster, 2nd Viscount Montrose. The first settlers were farmers who grew corn, beans, and potatoes. In the 1830s, the state of Missouri granted land to the Webers to farm and build a school. The Webers started a foundry that produced cannons for the Union during the American Civil War. They also built two churches in Webster Groves - one in 1846 and one in 1847. In 1861, after Confederate General Robert E Lee's Invasion of Missouri failed to capture Springfield or any other important cities highlighted by Union forces as targets (like Kansas City), General Ulysses S Grant ordered all military installations within seventeen miles of Springfield be destroyed except for Fort Donelson which remained operational until 1865 due to its strategic location on an insurmountable mountain pass separating Tennessee from Arkansas). In 1865, when Fort Donelson finally fell due to lack of food and reinforcements brought by Sherman's army advancing through central Illinois towards St Louis`, Webster Groves had become an important transportation hub with over 20 passenger steamboats docking at its wharf each day bringing goods from Hannibal/Springfield via Fulton Ferry across the river into Clay County for shipment downriver to Hannibal/Springfield or points eastward along the Ohio River into Kentucky where it was offloaded onto barges moored near Louisville before being transported back upstream past Pike’s Peak National Monument all while serving as a stopover on their way southbound from Memphis making it one of only two commercial ports open during that time period between Cairo on the Mississippi River and New Orleans on Lake Pontchartrain) After years of decline following World War II when most manufacturing left town because there were no new markets available ( Chevrolet stopped making sedans here in 1953), starting in 1978 they began developing what would eventually become known as "The Park" area around downtown including building some of America's first high-rise apartments (the current tower opened up in 1984) but even this did not save them from bankruptcy aftermarket developers bought most everything inside those walls within 5 years leading to another round of layoffs followed by rebranding as "Groves Properties" just long enough for them to actually make money once more before becoming bankrupt again 4 years later following another round of predatory lending practices which has resulted in 1 out of every 3 homes being foreclosed upon since then), things have slowly begun improving thanks largely to Denny’s restaurant coming online almost immediately adjacent thereto providing jobs and economic stimulus much needed given how dire things have been lately Today Webster Groves remains aworking class city with significant poverty rates but also good opportunities for advancement both economically and socially thanks largely to its strong community spirit
